WICHITA, Kan. — Capping off a busy seven-day stretch, the Newman wrestling team welcomes Central Oklahoma to Fugate Gymnasium Tuesday night for an MIAA dual beginning at 7 p.m.
SCOUTING NEWMAN
It will be the seventh dual in as many days for the Jets (1-5, 0-2 MIAA), who opened up conference action against Lindenwood and Central Missouri last week before heading to the Midwest Duals Saturday. Newman picked up its first win of the season in Nebraska, topping Minot State on criteria 22-21 after winning four of the seven contested bouts.
Dustin Reed went a perfect 6-0 last week to move his record to 15-1 this season, his only loss coming in the final of the 125-pound bracket at the UNK Holiday Inn Open. The Junior allowed only five escape points in his four contested bouts and earned three major decisions. Sophomore Dalton Weidl has been on a tear since falling in the Jets' dual against Lindenwood, running off five straight wins including two majors and two falls at 197. Sophomore Kyle Ryan is 4-2 since putting on a Newman singlet, senior Colton Duhr is 9-6 after a 3-1 showing Saturday, and freshman Heath Gray leads the team with 17 wins.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
The Bronchos (5-5, 2-1 MIAA) are on a three-match losing streak after falling to No. 5 Nebraska-Kearney in an MIAA dual last week and following that up with a 25-16 loss to No. 12 California Baptist and a tough 16-15 loss to San Francisco State at the Midwest Duals Saturday.
UCO, which just like Newman is receiving votes in the latest D2wrestle.com poll, Has six grapplers ranked at their weight in the Super Region 4 poll, and 10 that have already reached at least 10 wins. Mason Thompson is 21-5 at 174 pounds, while Spencer Rutherford comes in at 20-7. Rutherford joined teammate Joshua Ailey at the top of the podium at the Reece Wright-Conklin Jet Invitational last month, with Thompson and Jeromy Davenport coming in second and Josh Breece, Danny Carrillo, Blake Dauphin, Kyle Factor and Brock Warren all earning bronze.
