Jets Welcome Washburn For Nonconference Games

WICHITA, Kan. — With three wins in its last five games in its back pocket, the Newman softball team stays right at home Tuesday afternoon, facing Washburn in a nonconference doubleheader at 3 p.m. at the Newman Softball Field.

SCOUTING NEWMAN

The Jets (10-20) snagged wins in their final two games to win a conference series against Texas A&M International last weekend, earning a walk-off victory in 11 innings Friday night and turning around to put up a 3-0 shutout Saturday afternoon. That came after splitting a doubleheader against Northwestern Oklahoma State that kicked off a stretch of 12 straight games at home for Newman.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

The Ichabods (12-12) just got done with an impressive weekend at a Central Region crossover tournament hosted by Missouri Western, closing the event with four straight wins that led to a 4-1 overall record across the three days. Washburn allowed a total of six runs during those four wins, which came after suffering a three-game losing skid.

                LEADERS

                Cassidy Merriman, Sophomore-.375 avg., 17 runs, 5 2B, 2 3B, 4 HR, 17 RBI, .667 slg.

                Taylor Zimmerman, Senior-.368 avg., 17 runs, 4 2B, 7 HR, 18 RBI, .735 slg.

                Haylee Marsteller, Senior-.333 avg., 11 runs, 1 2B, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 2 SB

                Samantha Carson, Junior-5-5, 2.59 ERA, 13 app., 8 CG, 2 shutouts, 70.1 IP, 25 BB, 39 SO

                Ashley Wills, Freshman-6-5, 3.92 ERA, 13 app., 8 CG, 69.2 IP, 33 BB, 40 SO

NOTES

-The Ichabods have proven able to do some damage with their bats, sitting 38th in the country with 0.83 home runs per game. That number is boosted by Zimmerman's seven long balls, which is 39th in the country by itself, and 18th when broken down to 0.33 per game.

-Medbery has apparently taken a liking to her new spot at the top of the lineup, as the junior has reached base eight times by hit or walk and went a perfect 5-for-5 on stolen base attempts last week.
