Jets Continue Heartland Play Against UTPB

WICHITA, Kan. — Trying to jump back on a hot streak after a recent rough patch, the Newman softball team heads to Texas-Permian Basin for a three-game Heartland Conference series Friday and Saturday.

SCOUTING NEWMAN

The Jets (12-25, 4-8 Heartland) have fell into a bit of a rut after jumping to life over the past few weeks. They held strong for long stretches but were ultimately swept in a doubleheader Tuesday against Northeastern State, and won the opener last weekend against Rogers State before falling in two close games to end the conference series.

                Taylor Mannis, Sophomore-.362 avg., 22 runs, 4 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 15-of-18 SB

Rachael Withers, Junior-.325 avg., 13 runs, 2 2B, 2 RBI, .391 OBP, 11-of-15 SB

                Mikayla Medbery, Junior-.308 avg., 18 runs, 6 2B, 1 3B, 10 RBI, 11-of-11 SB

                Kate Smith, Junior-5-15, 3.11 ERA, 24 app., 126.0 IP, 15 CG, 3 shutouts, 35 BB, 45 SO

                Katie Ingles, Senior-5-5, 3.41 ERA, 15 app., 74.0 IP, 6 CG, 1 shutout, 24 BB, 42 SO

SCOUTING THE OPPONENT

The Falcons (6-30, 2-13 Heartland) have dropped seven of their last eight, going 1-2 in conference series against Rogers and Oklahoma Panhandle State on the road the last two weeks. That followed a brutal stretch to start the Heartland season against Oklahoma Christian, St. Mary's and Lubbock Christian.

                LEADERS

                Zoe Murillo, Junior-.435 avg., 14 runs, 9 2B, 1 3B, 1 HR, .638 slg., .506 OBP

Mallory Hall, Junior-.352 avg., 12 runs, 3 RBI, .436 OBP

                Alyssa Lene, Freshman-.309 avg., 6 runs, 3 2B, 3 HR, 14 RBI

                RustieAnne Spinks, Freshman-2-4, 4.99 ERA, 19 app., 60.1 IP, 31 BB, 28 SO

                Randi May, Junior-2-8, 5.94 ERA, 24 app., 2 CG, 81.1 IP, 45 BB< 28="">

NOTES

-The Falcons aren't finding much success on the scoreboard, but they do have a star at the plate in Murillo, who finished last weekend with a .469 batting average, which at the time was 14th in the country and led the Heartland Conference.

-A 3-for-4 effort in the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader gave Mannis her 15th multi-hit game of the season, five of which have seen the sophomore pick up at least three hits.
