WICHITA, Kan. — Completing a thrilling comeback in the championship match, the Newman women's bowling team captured the title at the 58th Mid-States Championships Sunday.
The Jets won the final two games in the best-of-five match against Wichita State Sunday afternoon at West Acres Bowl to claim their first championship in the tournament they co-host with the Shockers.
They reached the final by topping Midland and Sam Houston State in the first two rounds after finishing second in qualifying after six team games and 20 baker games.
The Jet men, who were the defending tournament champions, also qualified second in action at Northrock Lanes, besting Hastings in the first round before falling to Wichita State in a tight 3-2 match in the semifinals. Grand View won the title over WSU.
In the individual standings, Newman pushed four women into the top 10. Kelly Machacek averaged 198.83 over six games to finish third, while Bethany Watson (196.33) was fifth, Kacey Collins (195.50) sixth and Leanne Vastbinder (194.50) eighth.
John Baeten averaged 213.17 over the six games to come in seventh on the men's side, while Nathan Brantley was right behind him in eighth with an average of 211.67.
Newman is back on the road this weekend, heading to Dallas for a pair of Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference league meets Saturday and Sunday.
