DALLAS — The Newman men's and women's bowling teams had a productive first weekend as members of the Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference, as both teams won a pair of league meets over the weekend.
Competing in the SWIBC III and IV competitions, the Jet women blew by the competition, winning by 544 pins on Saturday and 332 on Sunday.
Miranda Hejny (190.8 average), Ashton Anderson (190.4) and Leanne Vastbinder (186.4) finished in the top five and were named to the all-tournament team on Saturday. Anderson doubled up on Sunday, and won the individual title with a 192.3 average over seven games. Carley Sullivan (186.9) and Kacey Collins (183.6) also were top-five.
On Saturday, the Jet men turned a narrow lead after qualifying into a comfortable win by 293 pins. Sunday took until the final frame of the final game to give them a nine-pin win over LSU.
Aaron Loera picked up the individual title Saturday, averaging 214.6, and was joined by Chance Rivera (196.0) on the all-tournament team with a top-five finish. Nathan Brantley averaged 185.9 to finish fifth on Sunday.
The Jets take a week off before kicking off November with a trip to Georgia for the Brunswick Southern Collegiate Classic Nov. 4-5.
