MOLINE, Ill. — Chance Rivera roared to a program record and the women reached the bracket final as the Newman men's and women's bowling teams put together an impressive weekend at the Leatherneck Classic Saturday and Sunday.
Rivera shot 810 over his first three games, and finished with a total of 1,492 and a 248.67 average over six games. His average was 17 pins better than second place, the third-highest in the history of the Leatherneck, and a Newman program record.
He was joined in the top 10 by teammates Aaron Loera, who finished seventh with a 222.83 average, and Nathan Brantley, who was 10th with a 216.83 average. The men finished in 10th place in the 46-team field, just 45 pins out of qualifying for the eight-team bracket play.
The Newman women qualified sixth for bracket play after a few shaky baker games Sunday morning, but found their footing in a 2-1 win over St. Ambrose in the quarterfinals. Another tight 2-1 win in the semis, this time over Robert Morris, pushed the Jets into the final against Wichita State, which took two close games to snag a 2-0 win.
Kristen Machacek and Miranda Hejny finished 15th and 16th, respectively, just two pins apart in total score to put up averages of 198.67 and 198.33.
Newman gets to enjoy a few weeks off before its annual trip to Las Vegas for a pair of tournaments over Christmas Break.
