WICHITA, Kan. – After an almost two-week layoff between games the Newman baseball team gears up for its first home series of the season against Wayne State at McCarthy Field Saturday and Sunday.
SCOUTING NEWMAN
The Jets (1-3) were last in action at the Air Hogs DII Classic in Grand Prairie, Texas that was from Feb. 2-4. Newman took on MIAA opponent Washburn, which opened up the season on Feb. 2 but fell 8-6 to the Ichabods. The Jets earned their first win of the season the following day against East Central by shutting them out 6-0. Newman finished out the tournament on Feb. 4 with a doubleheader against Missouri Western and Lubbock Christian but lost 14-4 to the Griffons and dropped a 7-5 nonconference game to the Chaparrals.

NOTES
-Winter earned the Heartland Conference Pitcher of the Week Award two weeks ago, for his outstanding pitching performance against East Central on Feb. 3 that led Newman to its first victory of the season. He held the Tiger batters to a .050 batting average when he was on the mound, while striking out three batters during his 6 2/3 innings pitched.
-The Jets went 8-0 at home last season in the month of February during nonconference play, which included a home opening four-game series sweep of Wayne State at McCarthy Field.
