Jets Continue Nonconference Swing This Week

WICHITA, Kan. — After getting a weekend off, the Newman softball team is back in action with a pair of nonconference doubleheaders this week, traveling to Rockhurst Tuesday before hosting William Jewell Saturday afternoon.

SCOUTING NEWMAN

The Jets (2-15) dropped a pair of games Thursday against Southwest Baptist in their home opener. Both were one-run games, as the Bearcats held on for a tight 4-3 win in Game 1 before the guests squeaked out a 1-0 win in a pitcher's duel.

SCOUTING THE HAWKS

Rockhurst (5-7) has not played in over a week after going 2-4 at the 8-State Classic in Arkansas. Three of their losses came by a total of five runs, and they put up healthy wins of 4-0 over Pittsburg State and 10-3 over Nebraska-Kearney.

SCOUTING THE CARDINALS

William Jewell (3-5) fell to Winona State and Grand Valley State while grabbing a 7-1 victory over Ashland in a tournament in Illinois Friday and Saturday. That was just the second set of action on the season for WJC, which didn't start playing until Feb. 17.

NOTES

-Jets pitcher Kate Smith threw a gem in Thursday's final game against Southwest Baptist, allowing just a single run and striking out six against no walks, but suffered a tough-luck 1-0 loss in one of Newman's best performances in the circle this season.

-Ellise McGowan knocked a pair of doubles Thursday, and the senior is 4-for-7 in her past three games.
