Jets Host St. Edward's In Final Home Games

WICHITA, Kan. — With back-to-back series wins against Heartland Conference foes the past two weeks, the Newman softball team looks to make it an even three as they host St. Edward's this Saturday and Sunday at Newman Softball Field.

Saturday's doubleheader is a 1 p.m. start, with Senior Day festivities to follow for the seven Jet seniors. Sunday's single-game finale is set for noon.

SCOUTING NEWMAN

The Jets (14-32, 7-8 Heartland) have won five of their last eight, dating back to a doubleheader sweep of then-No. 5 St. Mary's two weeks ago. Since then they won two straight to take the series at Rogers State, then split a doubleheader at Fort Hays State on Tuesday.

SCOUTING THE HILLTOPPERS

St. Edward's (18-28, 10-5 Heartland) faced a tough task, falling in a doubleheader this week at No. 1 Angelo State. That followed a Heartland series against Oklahoma Christian which saw the Hilltoppers win 9-2 in the opener but then drop two straight extra-inning contests to close it out.

                Leaders

                Alex Mayfield-.382 avg., 22 runs, 3 2B, 7 RBIs, .438 OBP, 6 SB
                Kayla Appleby-.314 avg., 18 runs, 13 2B, 4 HR, 36 RBIs, .496 slg.

                Lauren Slatten-9-9, 3.42 ERA, 21 app., 118.2 IP, 77 BB, 121 SO
                Ashlee Rex-4-12, 4.04 ERA, 18 app., 98.2 IP, 43 BB, 62 SO

NOTES

-With just two weekends of conference play left in the season, there's still plenty to decide in the race for the league postseason. Seven teams are still in the running for the five spots in the tournament, and just three games separate the second-place Hilltoppers and the sixth-place Jets.
