PLANO, Texas — Starting off their competition in 2018 on a strong note, the Newman men's and women's bowling teams each took home a pair of titles in Southwest Intercollegiate Bowling Conference tournaments over the weekend.
Kicking off the action Saturday at Spare Time Lanes in Arlington, Texas, the Jet women blew by the competition by nearly 600 pins, averaging 193.6 per bowler over five team games. They also took the top three spots in the individual standings, led by Miranda Hejny, who won the individual title by averaging 221.
The men held onto a tight lead after team games with a steady performance through 16 baker games to top LSU by 59 pins.
They followed that up with an impressive day Sunday at Plano Superbowl, winning by more than 400 pins. Nathan Brantley took home the individual title by averaging 233.6 over seven individual games, leading four Jets in the top six.
Newman made it four team titles on the weekend as the women topped 1,000 in four of seven games and put two in the top five in the individual standings.
Through 10 events this season, the women have won five titles and placed in the top four in each tournament. The men have won four titles and finished in the top 10 eight times.
The Jets return to action Feb. 3-4, looking to add to their streak at the SWIBC Championships in Shawnee, Okla.
