Newman Triathlon Finishes Program Best At Nationals

TEMPE, Ari. — The Newman Triathlon team traveled to Arizona where they raced in three races over two days for nationals. This year's race was switched where the women raced first and the men would follow, giving both genders opportunities to race in cooler morning weather.

The Jets men were represented by Mac Foley and Elijah Salas for these two athletes to qualify in the race they had to be in the top 75 in the country. Foley finished with a 15:21 swim time while Salas had a 15:26 swim time. As the two moved over to the bike portion Foley was able to get into a pack and work with some other athletes, as Salas spent most of the first lap alone before picking up another to work with. Foley completed the bike with a time of 35:15 and Salas finished with a time of 37:43. The last event for the men was the 5k and Mac Foley finished with a time of 20:24 finishing with a total time of 1:15:58, putting him 60th in the nation. Elijah finished with a run time 37:43 and an overall time of 1:17:14 putting him in 64th in the nation.

Saturday started the transition setup and the men were up first with racers being Wyatt Mattas, Koki Takemoto, Jonah Wagner, Brandon Steiner, and Andrew Nguyen.  Mattas was the top finisher with a time of 2:16:26 for a 156 overall position out of 1,085 athletes. The rest of the team performed extremely well. Jonah – 2:31:43, Brandon – 2:34:05, Andrew – 3:02:08, and Steven – 3:15:49.

The women were up next Marlie Wagner was the first to cross the line for the women's team in a time of 2:54:26. Followed by Taylor Stevens with a time of 3:10:16, Makayla Ehmke finished with a time of 3:17:13, and Amanda Lee who finished with a time of 3:59:25. Next up was the mixed team relay, the team consisted of Elijah, Taylor, Mac, and Marlie in that order. They would each complete a 250m open water swim, 3 mile bike, and 1 mile run before tagging the next person. The team time would be from when the first person starts the swim until the last person crosses the finish line of the run. Newman managed total team time of 1:25:01 for a 32nd place.

The Jets as a team was able to manage 57th place in the nation after finishing 98th and 74th in previous two years, the future for the Jets Triathlon is looking up after this year.
