WICHITA, Kan. - Newman Men's and Women's triathlon raced an exhibition race at the Downtown YMCA Sunday morning. The event was the triathlon program's first home event in program history.
There were 121 competitors across all levels. Two teams were represented at the race with members from Newman University and members from the University of Missouri. Racers swam 500 yards before transitioning to a 6 mile stationary bike and capping of the day with a trip up three flights of stairs for a two mile run around the indoor track.
Newman welcomed the transition element to Sunday's race as this was one of the few times the team will race in that format before nationals in Lake Lanier, Georgia on April 1st and 2nd.
The Jets were led by
Wyatt Mattas who led the college men with a time of 35:23 and
Ashley Salgado who paced the women with a time of 43:24.
Marlie Wagner came in just behind Salgado at 44:21 for third best on the women's side.
Full collegiate results are appended above.
Coach
Jeff Lovgren said of the event, "It is a great experience for our athletes to have a bit of a home crowd pushing them through." Lovgren also added that he is extremely eager to see how his team will fair at the national event in April.
