WICHITA, Kan. - The Newman wrestling team took on No. 22 ranked Fort Hays State in a packed Fugate Gymnasium on Wednesday evening. The Jets would start off hot out of the gates as they would win six of the first seven matches of the evening before dropping the final three matches on their way to a 26-14 victory over the top 25 ranked Tigers.
Newman would start out with
Jake Patch at 125 who would defeat his opponent, Collin Cole, with a second round pin. No. 7 ranked
Tyler Lawley, 133, would also win by a fall, but Lawley would get his in the first period over Dy'Juan Carney. The Jets would get their first loss of the evening at 141 when
Baylor Smith would fall to No. 2 ranked Brandon Ball by an 11-2 major decision.
Kevin Kissane, 149, would get the Jets back on track as he would defeat Anthony Scantlin by a 7-4 decision.
Mario Rodriguez, 157. would get a third period 19-4 tech fall over Josh Lenker.
At 165,
Kendall Frame would defeat Conrad Vajnar by a 10-3 decsion.
JD Johnson, 174, would win a 10-6 decision over Matt Hook that would secure the win for the Jets as FHSU wouldn't be able to catch the Jets with the final three matches as Newman led 26-4.
Nate Panagakis, wrestling at 184, would fall to FHSU Aryus Jones by a 6-0 decision.
Ivan Balavage, 197, would find himself on the wrong side of a 9-7 decision to the Tigers Jordan Davis. In the final match of the evening,
Thor Balavage, 285, would fall to A.J. Cooper by an 8-0 major decision.
The Jets will be back in action on March 1 as they participate in the NCAA Super Regional.
