LUBBOCK, Texas – The Newman Jets softball team travels down to familiar territory as they will participate in former Heartland Conference opponent Lubbock Christian's season opening tournament. This will be the first action for the Lady Jets of the season.
Their first game will feature another former Heartland Conference foe in St. Edwards. The Hilltoppers lead the all-time series with the Jets 28-10. However, the Jets have won three of their last four meetings. The most recent of those meetings being a 4-3 victory for Newman in last April in conference play.
The second game of the weekend comes against New Mexico Highlands and this will be the first meeting between the two teams.
The third game of the weekend and only game the Jets will play on Saturday comes against Eastern New Mexico, a team the Jets have faced just twice in program history. Both of those games being 6-1 losses for the Jets in February of 2015.
On Sunday, game one of the Jets double header will be against Colorado Springs, another team the Jets have never squared off with.
Their final game of the road trip comes against another former Heartland Conference foe in Texas – Permian Basin. UTPB leads the overall series 18-8, winning the last three meetings between the two teams. The last time Newman and UTPB faced off was in 2016, the last year that Permian Basin was in the Heartland Conference before leaving to join the Lone Star Conference.
