WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH
The Newman women start MIAA play this week.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Jets never trailed and 14 of the 15 Jets who played scored in a 115-24 thrashing of Manhattan Christian College Nov. 28. The Jets outscored the Thunder 26-4 after 10 minutes and never looked back. The Jets ended the game officially on a 113-24 run that spanned 39:42 of game time, program records for points in a run and length of a run. Despite the lopsided first quarter, NU only shot 41.7% from the field. That got corrected in the second and third periods; over the next 20 minutes of the game, the Jets hit 23 of 37 shots (62.1%) while hitting 14 of 19 3-pointers over that span. The Jets set several school records in the game including points in a game and margin of victory (91). The Thunder committed more turnovers (36) than they attempted shots (34).Â
Carissa Beck scored a career-high 30 points while setting a school record with 10 3-pointers in the game.

BEHIND ENEMY LINES
Lincoln women's basketball finished 2021-22 with a 5-23 record going 1-20 in MIAA play. The five wins was a three-win increase over the previous season. The Blue Tigers has suffered 10-consecutive losing seasons following a 15-13 season in 2011-12. With a program that dates back to 1981, LU has never had a winning record in conference play and is trying to break a streak of 17-straight losing seasons in league action. A .500 record would match the program's best conference winning percentage, the most recent of which came in 2004-05 when the Blue Tigers went 6-6 in the Heartland Conference. Lincoln is seeking its first NCAA Tournament appearance. The Blue Tigers are trying to end a seven-year postseason drought after falling in the first round of the 2015 MIAA Tournament to Missouri Western following a 12-14 season in 2014-15. The Blue Tigers finished that season 7-12 in conference play.
Â
Lincoln fell 78-54 in their conference opener at Pittsburg State on Monday. Le'Yanna McGinnis is averaging 20.0 ppg for the Blue Tigers and is also their leading rebounder grabbing six boards per contest.
Â
Central Missouri enters the week #23 in the D2SIDA Media Poll and is receiving votes in the WBCA Coaches Poll. The Jennies finished 19-11 in 2021-22 with a 15-7 record inside 'The Association.' The Jennies are looking for their seventh-straight winning season in 2022-23 and haven't suffered a losing record since an 11-18 campaign in 2015-16. Last season is the only one in the span that hasn't featured at least 20 wins. The Jennies have nine 20-win seasons over their last 11 and won the program's second NCAA Division II National Championship following a 30-3 effort in 2017-18. Prior to last year, the Jennies had not lost more than four MIAA games in any of the previous five seasons. Central Missouri has made 19-straight trips to the postseason but fell to Missouri Western in the first round of last year's MIAA Tournament. Last season ended a five-year streak of berths in the NCAA postseason. The Jennies are seeking their 26
th ticket to March Madness this spring.
Â
Central Missouri is hosting Central Oklahoma Thursday. It will be the Jennies' first game since pounding future KCAC member Evangel 102-49 on Nov. 16. Brooke Littrell leads three UCM players in double figures with 19.0 ppg while Olivia Nelson is scoring 14.3 ppg with an incredible 6.0 assist to turnover ratio with 12 assists against just two turnovers through three games.
Â
THE SERIES
The Navy & Red lead the all-time series 7-5 over the Blue Tigers. The Jets lead 3-2 in MIAA competition. The Jets' win in Wichita February 24, 2022, ended back-to-back wins for Lincoln, their only consecutive wins in the series. The Jets are 1-5 against LU in Jefferson City.
Â
The Jennies lead the Jets 4-0 in the series. UCM is 3-0 in MIAA games against the Jets. The Navy & Red are 0-1 at the Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg.
Â
PREVIOUS MATCHUP
Newman dominated the glass 39-22 en route to outscoring Lincoln 34-16 in the paint to win Homecoming 78-64 February 24, 2022, at Fugate Gymnasium in Wichita. The Jets jumped on the Blue Tigers defensively earlier holding LU to just seven points in the first quarter on the way to a 36-22 halftime lead. The Jets led by 25 with just under two minutes ago before Lincoln ended the game on a 12-1 run to make the score more respectable.Â
Carissa Beck led the Jets with a career-high 20 points and a personal best six threes.

The Jets played one of their better defensive games of the year holding Central Missouri 16 points below their scoring average, but they were unable to trigger their own offense and fell 55-40 to the Jennies January 15, 2022, at the Multipurpose Building in Warrensburg, Mo. Central Missouri did the bulk of their damage in the first half leading NU 36-26 at the break. The Jets held UCM to just eight field goals in the second half but NU's offense sputtered as the Jets shot just 6-for-25 from the field after halftime scoring just six field goals of their own.Â
Britney Ho and Tiffany Dortland each paced the Jets with eight points.

REWRITING THE RECORD BOOK
The Newman women did significant damage to the Newman Jets women's basketball record book (NCAA Division II era) in their victory over Manhattan Christian. 115 points set a new record for scoring in a game eclipsing the 111 points the Jets put up against Oklahoma Panhandle February 24, 2011. The 91-point margin of annihilated the Jet record of a 69-point win over Central Christian (Mo.) 87-18 on November 14, 2016. The Jets racked up 36 assists, surpassing their 31 assists against both Oklahoma Panhandle (February 23, 2012) and Kansas Christian (December 13, 2016). The Jets forced 36 Thunder turnovers, one more than their previous record of 35 forced against Texas A&M International January 19, 2019, in Wichita. The Jets used 25 steals to force those turnovers, surpassing the program's previous high of 21 pilfers against New Mexico Highlands November 10, 2017.
Â
SOUPED UP SUPERLATIVES
The Jets' record-breaking win over Manhattan Christian Nov. 28 also updated several superlatives for the Jets. The 91-point win was the first win of at least 50 points since the Jets beat MCC last season 91-23. That 68-point win was the second-largest margin of victory in program history before Monday's beatdown of the Thunder.Â
Carissa Beck's 30 points were the first time a Jet had scored 30 since Kaitlyn Potter went for 30 in a road win at Missouri-St. Louis November 29, 2019. The Jets 36 turnovers forced against Manhattan Christian were the first time the Jets had forced at least 25 turnovers against an opponent when they turned MCC over 25 times November 27, 2021.
Â
CLOSE CALLS
The Jets threatened several other records in their blowout victory over Manhattan Christian Nov. 28. The Jets were two field goals shy of tying their record of 46 makes against Oklahoma Panhandle February 24, 2011. The Jets seven turnovers is tied for the third fewest in a game in program history. The Jets have twice committed just six turnovers: first against Southwestern in 2018, then against Randall in 2019.
Â
SCINTILLATING AT THE CENTURY-MARK
The Jets topped 100 points for the first time since the Jets scored a 109-45 win against Kansas Christian December 13, 2016. The Jet history of 100-point games in its NCAA Division II history in order of points scored is listed below:
Â
1.           115-24 W, Manhattan Christian               11/28/22             Wichita
2.          111-106 W, Oklahoma Panhandle            2/24/11               Goodwell, Okla.
3.           109-45 W, Kansas Christian                         12/13/16             Wichita
4.           107-84 W, Oklahoma Panhandle              2/26/12               Goodwell, Okla.
5.           101-97 W, 3 OT, Arkansas Fort Smith      2/7/21                  Wichita
6.           100-48 W, Oklahoma Panhandle              2/23/12               Wichita
Â
NAIA DOMINANCE
Newman is 39-2 against NAIA-level or lower competition since joining the ranks of the NCAA in the 2007-08 season. The Jets have won 33 straight against teams from the NAIA or lower classifications. The Jets last suffered defeat against an NAIA squad in a 69-66 decision on the road at Peru State December 11, 2010. The only other team to knock off the Jets from this level is Kansas Wesleyan from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. The Coyotes grounded the Jets in overtime during the 2009-10 season.
Â
CARISSA KNOWS IT ALL
Carissa Beck set the NU single-game 3-point field goals made record by going 10-for-13 from outside the arc Nov. 28 against Manhattan Christian. Beck's previous career high was six, set against Lincoln in Fugate Gymnasium the last week of the season last year. Beck has hit 18 3-pointers on the season and is now 10
th in program history in career 3-point field goals made. Beck knocked Dede Johnson off the list who connected on 51 threes in 60 games from 2017-19. The 13 attempts by Beck in the game, surprisingly, does not crack the top 10 in 3-pointers attempted in a game. There have been seven occurrences of 14 threes attempted in a game, which are tied for sixth most in program history. Kaitlyn Potter is the current record holder after attempting 17 3-pointers against St. Mary's January 17, 2019.

HO NO!!
Britney Ho missed an opportunity to claim a record for herself in the Jets victory Nov. 28 over Manhattan Christian College. Ho had started the season 12-for-12 from the free throw line and had tied Brooke Haney for the most consecutive free throws made to begin a season, but her first attempt from the line missed off the rim. Haney accomplished the feat over nine games to begin the 2019-20 season while Ho managed it in just four games this year. Ho had made 14-straight at the line dating back to last season and was chasing Kaitlyn Potter's program record of 22-straight free throws made, also set in 2019-20. Ho enters this week an impressive 16-for-17 at the line and has made 18 of her last 19 dating back to her last game in 2020-21. (
Editor's note:Â The Newman Jets Audio Network did NOT mention this record before the shot, further proving that there is no such thing as the 'announcer's jinx'.)
Â
PUTTING IN THE TIME
Before last season, no Jet had logged 40 minutes in a game since 2016. That season, Shaunice Robinson and Bria DeGrate each played at least 40 minutes in a 63-58 defeat in overtime to Rogers State February 20,
2016, in Claremore, Okla. Last season,
Carissa Beck played every minute of the game five times, including a stretch of three out of four games in late January. Beck logged over 32 minutes per game last season and was the first Jet to register over 900 minutes since Bria DeGrate played 925 minutes in 31 games in the 2018-19 season. Beck played 149 more minutes than the second-most used Jet last season and logged 39 minutes in two other games last year while playing at least 30 minutes in 20 of her 28 games a year ago.
Â
HEIGH-HO, IT'S OFF TO WORK SHE GOES
Senior forward
Britney Ho enters her senior season with a chance to etch her name into the Newman record books. Her 49.0% field goal percentage was the eighth-best recorded by a Jet in the Division II era a season ago. The Wichita has an opportunity to finish in the top 10 in career field goal percentage and scoring average this season. Alexandra Ciabattoni is the all-time leader in season field goal percentage after hitting 59.5% of her shots during her sophomore campaign in 2013-14.
Â
BECK AND CALL
Senior shooting guard
Carissa Beck made an impressive debut shooting from the outside a season ago. The former Circle High School Thunderbird shot 36.7% on 3-pointers last season, good for ninth best all-time in Newman's Division II era. Beck's 50 3-point field goals were tied for seventh-most in program history. Hitting 50 of her 139 attempts, Beck has already qualified for Newman's career 3-point field goal percentage records and enters the season tied atop the list with Hannah Alexander who also hit 36.7% of her three-balls during her two-year career from 2016-18. Alexander also owns Newman's season 3-point field goal percentage record after shooting a blistering 41.4% from downtown during her junior season in 2016-17. The all-time 3-point leader in makes and attempts is Kaitlyn Potter who finished 196-for-539 in her two-year Jet career.
Â
OUR NEWEST EXHIBIT
The Jets played an exhibition for the first time since 2020 when Kansas State visited Fugate Gymnasium and narrowly escaped with a 63-59 victory. That was also the last time the Navy & Red squared off with a foe from NCAA Division I. Newman's last trip to Bramlage Coliseum was November 7, 2016, as the Wildcats overwhelmed the Jets on the way to a 100-33 exhibition victory. Bria DeGrate led Newman with nine points.
Â
JOHNSON & JOHNSON
Newman began a new era in 2021 as the Jets welcomed
Drew Johnson and
Nicole Ohlde-Johnson to Wichita as the new leaders of Jets Women's Basketball. The Johnsons are in their second season at Newman and enter 2022-23 with a 3-25 record at NU while posting a 1-21 mark in MIAA play. The husband-and-wife team didn't have to travel far to Wichita, moving from just minutes up the road after spending four seasons at Bethel College where Drew was the head coach and Nicole was his associate head coach.Â
Drew Johnson compiled a 64-53 record in North Newton, while going 51-41 in Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference play. Under their leadership, the Johnsons helped Bethel to its first ever 20-win season as the Threshers went 20-10 and hosted their first KCAC Tournament game inside Thresher Gym in 8 years. In their final year at the helm, the Johnsons led the Threshers to a 16-10 season while going 16-6 in the KCAC, delivering the program's first ever NAIA National Tournament appearance.
Â
The Johnsons bring with them a wealth of basketball experience both on and off the court. Ohlde-Johnson, a Clay Center, Kan. native, played collegiately at Kansas State University where she was a two-time first-team All-American and departed as the school's all-time leading scorer, rebounder, and shot blocker. Ohlde-Johnson was drafted in the first round of the 2004 WNBA draft and played seven years in the league and helped the Phoenix Mercury win the 2009 WNBA title. After playing in Europe, Ohlde-Johnson founded the Nicole Ohlde Basketball Academy with Drew serving as a player trainer and coach for the club competing on the AAU circuit.
Â
Prior to becoming the Bethel head coach,
Drew Johnson previously served on the high school
girls basketball coaching staff at Valley Center, Derby, and Clay Center High Schools in Kansas. Johnson is a Wichita native and Friends University graduate. Johnson was a two-year captain and four-year starter for the Falcons football program and earned All-KCAC honors as a punter. As part of Ohlde Basketball Academy and Ohlde Elite, the Johnsons coached players that went on to play at all levels of basketball including the Big 12, Big East, Missouri Valley, MIAA, and KCAC.
Â
The Johnsons are 1-1 against Lincoln and 0-1 versus the Jennies.
Â
TRAINING THE TIGERS AND JUMPING WITH THE JENNIES
Andrea Mize is in the third year of her tenure rebuilding the Lincoln women's basketball program. Now in her fifth season as a head coach, Mize's career record at the start of the year was 36-77. Through two years with Lincoln, Mize started the year 5-43 with the Blue Tigers with a 3-40 record in the MIAA. Mize came to Lincoln following two seasons at Central Florida College where she went 31-34 overall, but 19-15 in her last year. Mize spent three years as an assistant at Martin Methodist College where she helped lead the program to two NAIA Tournament berths. Mize played for three seasons collegiately at Indiana where she played for WNBA coach Curt Miller.
Â
Mize is 2-3 in her career against the Jets.
Â
Dave Slifer is in his 19
th season leading Central Missouri women's basketball and is one of the legends of the game. Slifer started the season as the second-winningest active coach in NCAA Division II and was a staggering 375-166 with UCM while going 243-107 in MIAA games. In 33 years of coaching coming into the year, Slifer was 759-265 overall with a 358-148 record in league action. Slifer's tradition of winning has followed him at each of his coaching stops. Slifer began his career with a stop at his alma mater Mount Mercy where he won at least 28 games in each of his six seasons as the Mustangs went 178-30 during his tenure. He departed the program after leading the 'Stangs to four-straight NAIA Tournament appearances from 1992-95. He then took over the program at Missouri Western and took the Griffons to new heights inside the MIAA. Western went 206-69 in his nine years and 115-41 inside 'The Association.' Slifer helped Missouri Western to eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances following eight 20-win seasons to end his tenure while winning two MIAA titles. In 18 years in Warrensburg, he's led the Jennies to 11 Big Dance berths and the 2018 national title. He's won at least 11 conference games in all but three seasons with UCM and has logged just one losing season with the Jennies. Overall, Slifer has 19 NCAA Tournament appearances under his belt. Last season's fourth place MIAA finish is the only time UCM has not finished as the regular season MIAA champion or runner-up in the past six seasons.
Â
Slifer is 4-0 against Newman.
Â
SCOUTING THE SQUADRON
Newman finished 2021-22 with a 3-25 record while going 1-21 in MIAA play. The Navy & Red return seven players from last year's team including top scorer
Britney Ho, who averaged 10.4 ppg. Ho also led the Jets in total rebounds averaging 5.1 rpg and was the team's best field goal shooter at 49%. Senior
Carissa Beck averaged 32 mpg last year while playing and starting in all 28 contests for the Jets. Beck scored 6.5 ppg while leading Newman with 51 3-pointers and connecting on 36.7% of her shots from the outside. Sophomore
Lauryn Dubbert was third on the team in assists last year with 59.
Â
Newman will carry three seniors on the roster this season while integrating four freshmen into the program. The Jets welcome eight transfers to the roster in 2022-23 including four from the junior college level, three from NCAA Division II, and one from NCAA Division I. The Jet lineup features two graduate students, four juniors, and six sophomores.
Â
INTERNATIONAL FLIGHTS
Newman's new players arrived in Wichita from all over the country during the offseason and even around the world. After boasting 15 Jets from just three different states a year ago, Newman women's basketball will have a much more diverse list of hometowns on this year's roster. Six Jets are from the Sunflower State, three are from Texas with Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, and South Dakota also represented. For the first time in the Johnson era, the Jets have at least one international player on the roster with players from Lithuania and Spain joining the squad for 2022-23.
Â
