Jets soar as the Falcons remain grounded in season opening sweep

2/9/2022 9:28:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 WICHITA, Kan. – Newman softball finally got to play some games as they squared off with the Friends Falcons in West Wichita on Wednesday.  The

Jets earned the sweep of the Falcons via scores of 9-7 and 9-1.

After waiting for over week and seeing a home and away series with East Central postponed, Newman planned to host the Friends Falcons.  The snow was melted and it was time to play ball, but the field conditions at NU Softball Field were far too soggy to play upon.  The two teams worked out a deal to take on one another at the Friends' home ballpark.

Newman starts the year 2-0 while the Falcons just can't take flight and fall to 0-2 on the young season.

Coach Andrea Gustafson welcomed 12 new faces to the program this season and it was those debuting for the Jets that shined brightest.

Game 1:

Madison Canez helped lead the Jets to a two-run victory thanks to 4 RBI's on 2-4 at the plate.

Newman scratched two late runs across in the 6th and 7th innings after the Falcons hung a 5 spot in the 5th inning to tie the game at 7.  An RBI ground out from Lauren Kuhrt scored Laurie Cooke after Cooke tripled to right the at bat prior.  This run was the eventual game winner in the top of the 6th.  In the top of the 7th, Madison Canez swung a double scoring an insurance run for the Jets.

Newman took game 1 9-7.

Game 2:

The second game of the day made way for Janine Gutierrez.  The Freshman toed the rubber and did not disappoint.  Gutierrez hurled a complete game allowing 6 hits and 0 earned runs on her way to her first career victory.  The Falcons inked across one unearned run in the bottom half of the fourth, but Gutierrez did not skip a beat after that to aid the Jets on their way to the series sweep.

Newman was sparked by Taylor Ullery's 3-run homer in the top the first and along with Janine Gutierrez's pitching, the Jets did not look back.

Up next for the Jets is a trip to Northwestern Oklahoma State on Tuesday, February 15th.  First pitch for the doubleheader is slated for 2 PM.
