JOPLIN, Mo. – The Men's and Women's Cross Country teams traveled to Joplin, Missouri to compete in the Southern Stampede hosted by Missouri Southern. After a great start in the Hutch Twilight Classic both teams looked to improve in today's Men's 8k and Women's 5k.
 
It was another day of record breaking for freshman Britton Kelly. Kelly ran a time of 18:38 which is a new record at Newman for fastest time ever for a freshman and is also 4th fastest all time for Women's 5k at Newman. Kelly's time led the Jets as she finished in 63rd.
 
It was also a day of personal bests for the Women as Patricia Limo ran 11 seconds faster at this year's race compared to the 2021 Southern Stampede. Nayelly Rosales had her best time ever with a time of 20:11 while Ashley Salgado and Isabella Torres had their best times ever as well with times of 20:20 and 20:30.
 
The Women finished in 20th out of 26 teams and finished better than conference foe Emporia State for the first time in over 6 years and Central Oklahoma in what was a very stacked field of runners. Newman's youth had a big day as all those with personal bests were freshmen and sophomores.
 
On the Men's side, Asher Brown continued to pace the team. Brown placed in the top 30 of a stacked field with a time of 25:32 which was a personal best and good for top 3 all time at Newman in the 8k, only missing the record by 13 seconds. Austin Hock and Paul Sevart both stepped up and placed in the top 5 of the team with times of 27:17 and 27:57.
 
The Men's team had a decent showing but look to the upperclassmen to step up in the next race scheduled for September 30^th, the Chili Pepper Run. The men finished 15^th out of 21 teams.
