Jets In Second Place In Heartland Commissioner's Cup

WICHITA, Kan. — Picking up top-four finishes from four of its five teams, Newman finished the fall season in second place in the Heartland Conference Commissioner's Cup standings, the league office announced Wednesday morning.

Led by the women's cross country team earning a third-place finish at the conference championships in October, the Jets earned 0.674 of its possible points in the standings, coming in just 0.011 behind first-place St. Edward's.

Newman finished tied for third in women's volleyball, tied for fourth in men's soccer, fourth in men's cross country and fifth in women's soccer, earning 31 points out of a possible 46 in the conference's scoring system, which awards one point for a last-place finish, and one more for each place higher in the standings a team finishes. St. Edward's finished the fall with 31.5 points and the same 46 possible points.

Men's and women's basketball get added to the totals in the winter, followed by a busy finish in the spring, with baseball, softball, men's and women's golf and men's and women's tennis getting tagged on. Newman finished the sixth in the first Commissioner's Cup last year, and sat in second after the fall season.
