WICHITA - Freshman
Brandon Carlos' first goal of the season fueled the Newman men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over eighth-ranked Rockhurst Sunday afternoon at Wilkins Field.
Playing their first game in a week, the well-rested Jets were able to use a new offensive strategy to stand up to the test provided by the visiting Hawks, who were dealt their first loss of the seaon Friday night in Quincy, Ill. Rockhurst was the aggressor early in the match, out-shooting the Jets 9-3 in the opening frame, and committing six fould, but the Newman defense held strong, and forced a scoreless tie going into the halftime break.
The stale mate continued for 18 minutes into the second half when senior forward
Joe Gerant connected with Carlos, who put Gerant's pass past Rockhurst's Kyle Clawson and into the back of the net for the first goal of the game. The goal was Carlos' first of the season, and proved to be the difference maker in the match. The Hawks out-shot the Jets 11-2 in the second half, but Newman goal-keeper
James Esquivel held his ground, picking up five saves in the match without allowing a goal.
Things got chippy toward the end of the match when flaring-tempers and an exchange of words led to a small scuffle that resulted in a yellow card being issued to Rockhurst's Dan Frohock, and a red card ejection was issuet to
Stephen Williams. When the fight was settled, the match continued and Newman held on for their first win of the season.
Newman faces a short turnaround as they are back in action Tuesday when they pay a visit to Sterling to take on the NAIA Sterling Warriors. Kickoff at Sterling's Smisor Stadium is set for 5 p.m.
