WICHITA - The Newman University women's soccer team, welcomed their new mascot, Johnny Jet, with a 4-1 victory over Ottawa, Monday night at Wilkins Field. The win was the Jets' second-straight three-goal win.
Newman's Mallory Hurst got things started when she received a cross-pass from Sade Humphrey to net her first goal of the season, giving the Jets a 1-0 lead at the 19:53 mark.
Two minutes later, at the 21:27 mark, Amanda Knabe headed her first goal of the season, off a corner kick from Lacey Alost to boost Newman's lead to 2-0. At the 34:22 mark, Sade Humphrey added her fifth goal on the season, beating Ottawa's Lauren Peil one-on-one from 18 yards out to give the Jets an early 3-0 lead.
Ottawa's Amanda Just, tried to give her team some momentum before halftime, as she scored off a Kristi French pass at the 41:08 mark to cut the lead to 3-1.
Celia Meyers, put the nail in the Ottawa coffin with her first goal on the season, as she beat Laurn Peil from the left corner with a shot that hit off the crossbar and dribbled into the back of the net to give the Jets their final 4-1 margin.
Newman's Christiana Farid ended the night with four saves, while Ottawa's Lauren Peil had two saves.
With the win, the Jets improve to 4-4 on the season. The Jets return to Wilkins Field on Oct. 2, as they face Heartland Conference rival St. Edwards, at 1 p.m.
