WICHITA - The Newman University women's soccer team was dealt its first setback of the 2010 season, as Rockhurst snuck away with a 1-0 win over the Jets Wednesday night at Wilkins Field.
The first half was a battle of defenses. Newman (2-1) was held to just three shots in the first 45 minutes, with its only shot on goal saved by Rockhurst keeper Lucy Sullivan. Likewise, Rockhurst (2-1) was limited to just four shots in the first period, with Newman keeper
Christina Farid saving the only shot on goal.
Rockhurst finally struck early in the second half when Margaret Rubin dribbled the ball past a Newman defender, then beat Farid for what proved to be the game-winning goal less than three minutes into the second half.
The Jets had some chances to even the game late in the second half, but couldn't sneak the ball past Sullivan as the Hawks went on for the win.
Lauren Benning finished with three shots to lead the Jets in the loss.
Rockhurst finished with 10 shots in the game, while Newman finished with eight.
With the loss, the Jets drop to 2-1 on the season. They will return to action Sunday, hosting Texas A&M-Commerce in an 11 a.m. contest at Wilkins Field.
