Patriots Top Jets in Four

WICHITA - Haley Dotson posted 17 kills as the Newman volleyball team lost its third-straight match, falling to Dallas Baptist Saturday afternoon in Fugate Gymnasium. Dotson was one of three Jets with 12-or-more kills.

-Dallas Baptist opened the first set using six Newman errors and kills from Christina Steinkruger and Krystal Wunderlich to jump out to a 8-1 lead. The Jets responded with kills from Karol Marins, Haley Dotson and Jeana Farruggia to draw it as close as 16-14 before the Patriots offense extened the lead to 21-19. Newman managed to tie the set 23-23 and again at 24-24 off a pair of Marins kills, but DBU won the set 26-24 when Katelyn Schmidtberger's attack attempt was blocked.

-The second set began with DBU jumping out to a 10-3 lead. The Jets fought back with Dotson and Farruggia kills, bringing it as close as 20-14 but DBU scored the final four points of the set to win 25-16.

-In the third set Newman fought back from a 14-9 deficit, using three Amanda Savage service aces to tie the set 15-15. DBU responded with kills from Steinkruger and Cameron Hartson to take a 21-18 lead but Newman used two Patriot attack errors and a Kristen White service ace to win the set 25-23.

-The fourth set was a back-and-fourth affair until the Jets pulled ahead 14-10 off kills from Marins and Schmidtberger. Dallas Baptist fought back using three blocks and three Newman errors to tie the set 19-19. The Patriot offense took over to close the set with a four point run to take the lead 23-20, and went on to win the match with a 25-21 fourth-set win.

- Haley Dotson led the Newman offense with 17 kills followed by Karol Marins (14) and Jeana Farruggia (12).

- Gabby Loxterman set 40 of the Jets' 52 assists and added four kills in the contest.

- Newman recorded eight blocks and held a .087 team hitting percentage in the match.

With the loss Newman falls to 4-17 on the season and 1-7 in Heartland Conference play. They will travel to San Antonio, Texas to take on conference rival St. Mary's Thursday October 20th at 7 p.m..
