WICHITA - Head Volleyball Coach Tessa Jones gave her former coach and mentor a first-set scare, but coach Chris Herron and the fifth-ranked Washburn Lady Blues left Fugate Gymnasium with a 3-1 win over the Newman volleyball team Tuesday evening. Washburn held Newman to a .094 attack percentage in the match.

-Washburn (12-1) jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first set, but a block-assist by Karol Marins and Alysia Heideman sparked a four-point rally that pulled Newman (1-10) to within one, 6-5, after an Amanda Savage service ace. The Lady Blues responded with a 5-3 spurt to take a 13-8 lead, but three-straight Washburn errors forced Herron to call a timeout with his team up 13-12. The Jets took their first lead of the match at 15-14 after a Lady Blue setting error, and extended it to 16-14 after a Heideman kill, but four-straight errors by the Jets allowed Washburn to take an 18-16 lead. Two points later, a Marins kill tied the match at 18-18. Another Marins kill tied the match at 19-19. Washburn threatened to take the first with a 24-22 lead after a Jessica Fey kill, but a Jessica Kopp service error gave Newman the serve, and the momentum. The Jets scored the final three points of the set, and sealed the deal with a Gabby Loxterman kill for the 26-24 first-set win.

-The Lady Blues followed suit in the second set, this time jumping out to a 4-1 lead, then extending that lead to 9-5 after a Jessica Fey kill, but Fey's ensuing serve found the net, giving the Jets the serve. A block-assist by Marins and Heideman, combined with a Lady Blues attack error pulled the Jets to within one, 9-8, but a 5-2 Washburn run gave the visitors a 14-10 lead. Newman refused to die quietly, however. The Jets scored the next three points to pull within one, 14-13, then completed the comeback after a block-assist by Katelyn Schmidtbergerand Gabby Loxterman. The Jets took a short-lived 16-15 lead thanks to a Washburn attack error, but the Lady Blues closed the set on a 10-2 run to even the match with a 25-18 win.

-Newman made the first move in the third set, taking a 3-0 lead after a Chelsea Helena kill. The Jets led until the 5-5 mark when a Marins attack sailed wide. Neither team was able to take more than a two-point edge until the late stages of the match when a Breanna Lewis kill gave the Lady Blues a 16-13 lead. After a Marins kill, Washburn scored the next five points to take a 21-14 lead before cruising to the 25-17 third-set victory.

-The Jets simply ran out of gas in the fourth set. Washburn scored the first two points of the game, and never relinquished that lead. After trailing by as many as seven, the Jets rallied to within three, 18-15, after a Washburn ball handling error, but the Lady Blues ended the match on a 7-2 spurt to secure the win.

-Senior Karol Marins led the Jets offensively, finishing with 12 kills on 47 attack attempts. Sophomore Haley Dotson added 10 kills as the only other Newman player in double figures.

-Sophomore Gabby Loxterman added a team-high 30 kills as Newman's primary setter in the match.

-Five Jets finished with 10-or-more digs in the contest. Kately Schmidtberger led the way with 14, while senior libero Kristen White added 12. Loxterman finished with 11 digs, while seniors Michelle O'Delland Amanda Savage each added 10.

-Schmidtberger finished the match as many block-assists individually (6) as the entire Washburn team. Marins and Alysia Heideman each added five block-assists of their own.

-As a team, the Jets were limited to a .094 attack percentage, posting 43 kills with 28 errors on 159 attack attempts. Washburn finished the match hitting .261 (61 kills, 21 errors, 153 attempts).

-Newman held an 11-3 blocking advantage as a team.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 1-10 on the season. They will continue a week of non-conference play Friday, opening play in the Pitt State Regional Challenge, hosted by Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, Kan.
