Baseball Blasts Six Bombs, Routs Bronchos, 18-11

Tanner Vinson belted two bombs in a 5-for-5 effort at UCO on Tuesday
EDMOND, Okla. - A first-inning home run set the pace for the Newman baseball team, which blasted six bombs in an 18-11 win over Central Oklahoma Tuesday afternoon at Simmons Field in Edmond, OKla. Tanner Vinson rode a pair of home runs to a 5-for-5 effort at the plate in the win.

Newman (6-4) set the tone early when Tanner Vinson's lead-off home run plated the first run of the game. Terrell Brown followed that with a single to left, then moved to second when the UCO left fielder misplayed the ball. Brown advanced to third on a passed ball, and eventually scored on David Longmore's single up the middle. After its first at-bat, Newman held a 2-0 advantage.

After spotting Central Oklahoma (10-3) a run in the bottom of the first, Newman answered in the second with Jordan Ollenberger singled to right, then moved to second on Jake Gaul's sacrifice bunt to set up an RBI opportunity for Tanner Vinson, who did his job. Vinson's left-field single was deep enough to score Ollenberger from second, and gave the Jets a 3-1 lead going into the bottom of the second.

The Bronchos used a pair of hits to plate a pair of runs, and tied the game at 3-3 after the third inning. Each team scored single runs in the fourth inning, and sent the game into the fifth inning tied at 4-4.

A tie game turned into a near-blow out in the fifth inning when the Newman bats discovered the long-ball once more. Brown led off the inning with a walk, then moved to second on a throwing error by the UCO pitcher. Ruben Marrero's single through the right side scored Brown, and moved Longmore, who reached on a walk, to third, but the runners weren't on the corners for long. Corey Cowan's blast over the centerfield fence cleared the bases and plated three runs for the Jets, and pushed the lead to 8-4. But the Newman bats were far from finished. Following a UCO pitching change, Jerrod Flax reached on a walk, then moved to second on Ollenberger's ground-out. Ben Wagner put himself on base when he was hit by a pitch, and put runners on the corners once again, this time for Vinson. Following Cowan's lead, Vinson sent a ball over the left field fence to plate three more runs, and gave the Jets a 12-4 lead in the middle of the fifth.

The Bronchos tried to answer in their half of the fifth, scoring four runs on four hits and a Newman error, and pulling within 12-8, but Newman continued to score. The Jets plated a pair of runs in the sixth, scored single runs in the seventh and eighth, and added two more runs for good measure in the ninth to secure the 18-11 win.

Newman used seven different pitchers in Tuesday's game. Jace Moore made his appearance in the fifth, and picked up his first win of the season. Moore pitched 1.1 innings, and picked up a strikeout while surrendering just one hit.

Tanner Vinson led Newman's offensive efforts, finishing with a perfect 5-for-5 effort at the plate with a pair of runs scored and seven runs batted in. David Longmore went 4-for-5 with two runs scored and two more batted in, while Corey Cowan added 3-for-5 effort with three runs scored and six batted in. All said, the Jets tallied 20 hits, six of which left the fences at Simmons Field.

With the win, the Jets improve to 6-4 on the season. They will return to action Friday, traveling to Laredo, Texas, for a weekend doubleheader at Texas A&M International.
