WICHITA - A sixth inning rally gave the Newman baseball team a brief late lead, but 11th-ranked St. Mary's scored three runs over the final three innings on its way to a 5-3 win Sunday afternoon at McCarthy Field.
Shanan Engroff led the Newman offense with a 2-for-4 effort at the plate.
Pitching dominated the first two innings, but St. Mary's (25-5, 19-2 Heartland) finally scored in the third, and took a 1-0 lead. The Rattlers added another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 2-0, but Newman (17-10, 12-9) was just getting started.
With one out in the sixth,
Tanner Vinson and
Tyler Hancock blasted back-to-back singles up the middle. Vinson scored on Hancock's single for Newman's first run of the game.
Ruben Marrero followed with a double down the left field line, and pushed Hancock to third in the process. Back-to-back walks from
Corey Cowan and
David Longmore forced Hancock home, and tied the game at 2-2. The walks forced Rattler starter Skye Severns out of the game with a no-decision as well.
Shanan Engroff welcomed Rattler reliever Jeremy Narvaez to the game with a fielder's choice that plated Marrero, and gave the Jets a 3-2 lead after six innings.
The hot bats of the Rattlers took over in the late stages of the game. St. Mary's plated a pair of runs in the seventh, and added another in the eighth, and handed the Jets their 10th loss of the season with a 5-3 decision.
Shanan Engroff finished the game as the only Jet to record multiple hits in the game. Engroff finished 2-for-4 in the game.
Newman starter
Jacob Furr allowed four runs (two earned) on six hits with six walks and four strikeouts in his 6.1 innings on the mound, and fell to 3-1 on the season.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 17-10 on the season, and 12-9 in Heartland Conference play. Newman will return to action Friday, hosting the St. Edward's Hilltoppers. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at McCarthy Field.
