WICHITA - A strong performance from starter
Brandon Droge, combined with a 17-hit offensive outing led the Newman baseball team to a series-winning 12-4 win over Texas A&M International Saturday afternoon at McCarthy Field. Droge improved to 6-4 with the win.
Newman (23-14, 17-13 Heartland) struck first in Saturday's series finale. With two outs in the bottom of the second,
David Longmore singled to left-center.
Shanan Engroff moved Longmore to second with a single down the left field line. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Longmore scored when
Ben Wagner was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. After two innings, Newman held a 1-0 lead.
Texas A&M International (20-20, 13-17 Heartland) answered with a pair of third-inning runs, and took a brief 2-1 lead, but the Jets responded with a game-tying run in their half of the third.
Tyler Hancock opened the inning with a double to right-center, then scored from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Jordan Ollenberger to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the fourth inning.
Newman starter
Brandon Droge shut the Dustdevils down over the next four innings, while his offense went to work. The Jets plated four runs in the fourth and added two runs in each of the final three innings to earn the 12-4 blow-out win.
Five different Jets recorded multi-hit days against the Dustdevil pitching staff.
David Longmore and
Shanan Engroff each went 3-for-4 at the plate. Longmore added three runs, while Engroff contributed two runs and two RBI thanks to a two-run home run in the seventh inning.
Tyler Hancock and
Ruben Marrero each went 3-for-5 at the plate as well.
Starter
Brandon Droge allowed just two earned runs on seven hits with a walk and five strikeouts in seven innings of work.
With the win, the Jets improve to 23-14 on the season, and 17-13 in Heartland Conference play. Next up for the Jets is a trip to Odessa, Texas to take on the Texas-Permian Basin Falcons. First pitch of Friday's game is schedule for 12-noon.
