Baseball Looks For Sweep Against Emporia State On Tues.

WICHITA- The Newman baseball team wraps up its home portion of the schedule on Tuesday, when Emporia State returns back the favor in Wichita. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at McCarthy Field. The Jets defeated the Hornets 2-1 on April 3 in Emporia, Kan.

Newman (25-15, 19-14 Heartland) is coming off of a series victory at Texas-Permian Basin, that secured its first ever bid into the Heartland Conference Tournament on May 11-13. The Jets are hitting .286 as a team, and are led by Jordan Ollenberger and Ruben Marrero, who are hitting .373 and .358 on the season. Tyler Hancock is leading the team in home runs (4), RBI's (27), and doubles (11). Gage Daniels and Jacob Furr have shut down opponents this season on the hill, holding opponents to a combined .244 average on the season. Daniels has been proficient on the mound, only walking four batters in 32.1 innings of work.

Emporia State (24-16, 19-13 MIAA) enters Tuesday's re-match, coming off of a three-to-four series victory ove Lincoln. The Hornets out-scored the Blue Tigers 45-12 during the weekend, including 17-0 and 15-2 victories on Saturday. Since its previous meeting with the Jets, Emporia State holds a 5-7 record. The Hornets are hitting .332 as a team, and feature eight players batting over .300 on the season. Emporia State has hit 29 home runs on the season, led by Joe Kornbrust's seven homers.

Game Notes:
-Emporia State scored the first run of the game in the first inning, but Newman notched four hits over the next four innings, and plated a run in the bottom of the fifth, when Ben Wagner scored from third on a fielding error by the third baseman.
-With two outs in the bottom of the sixth, David Longmore singled through the right side, and advanced to second when Jordan Ollenberger singled to right field. Ben Wagner's single plated Longmore, and gave Newman the 2-1 lead they went on to win by.
