Jets Run-Rule Aggies to Sweep Series, 19-5

GOODWELL, Okla. - Brandon Droge threw nine strikeouts, and the Newman offense produced 19 runs on 17 hits as the Jets defeated Oklahoma Panhandle State 19-5 in a seven-inning run-rule decision Saturday afternoon at Aggie Field in Goodwell, Okla.

After two scoreless innings, Newman (21-13, 15-12 Heartland) produced a pair of runs in the third. Jerrod Flax opened the inning with a single to center field, then stole second. Flax went on to score when Shanan Engroff, who singled to center, was caught stealing. Newman's next batter, Tyler Hancock, doubled to center, then scored on Ruben Marrero's single to first base, and gave Newman a 2-0 lead in the middle of the first.

Oklahoma Panhandle State (4-30, 3-21 Heartland) answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the third, but Newman countered with two more in the fourth before blowing the game open in the fifth. With two outs in the inning, David Longmore was hit by a pitch, then moved to second on a Jordan Ollenberger single to center. A Ben Wagner single pushed Longmore across the plate. A Flax walk loaded the bases for Tanner Vinson, who lofted a pitch into the 40 mph wind, and over the left-centerfield fence for a grand slam that pushed the Newman advantage to 9-1 after five innings.

Once again, OPSU countered with a pair of runs in the fifth, but the Jets answered with two more runs in the sixth, and pushed their lead to 11-3. And they were far from finished.

With one out in the top of the seventh, Tyler Hancock sent a no-doubter over the left field fence for a solo bomb, but that was just about the only offense in what ended up being a huge inning for the Jets. Newman notched just three hits in the inning, but four walks, two hit batsmen, and a fielding error at third base led to eight Newman runs, and gave the visiting Jets a 19-3 lead after seven innings.

The Aggies plated a pair of runs in the seventh, but were unable to take the 10-run rule out of play, and Newman cruised to the 19-5 win.

Tanner Vinson, Shanan Engroff and Tyler Hancock each finished 3-for-5 at the plate to lead Newman's offense. Vinson added two runs and six RBI, Engroff added a run and two RBI, while Hancock was credited with three runs scored and three more batted in.

Newman starter Brandon Droge allowed just three earned runs on eight hits, but threw nine strikeouts and a walk in six innings of work, and improved to 5-4 on the season.

With the win, the Jets improve to 21-13 on the season, and 15-12 in Heartland Conference play. Newman is scheduled to return to the diamond Tuesday, hosting Catholic arch rival Rockhurst in a 4 p.m. contest at McCarthy Field.
