Jets Win Four Weights In Tight Loss To UCM

WARRENSBURG, Mo. — The Newman wrestling team won the final two bouts of the night, including picking up a major decision, but it wasn't enough to top Central Missouri in the second of two straight MIAA duals to open the conference season, falling 22-16 Thursday night.

Sophomore Kyle Ryan earned his second straight win at 184 pounds to start his career for the Jets (0-2, 0-2 MIAA), earning a 10-3 decision over Mike Boyd of the Mules (2-3, 1-0 MIAA) to become the only Newman wrestler to wrestle two bouts and win them both over the past two days. Junior Dustin Reed received a forfeit at 125 to join Ryan in the ranks of the undefeated in dual-meet action in the early going.

Sophomore Dalton Weidl bounced back after getting pinned Wednesday night, making a point with a 19-7 major decision to close out the dual at 197. Junior Noel Torres picked up a 5-2 decision at 165 to earn his first dual win of the year as well.

The Jets get a well-deserved day off before heading to Kearney, Nebraska Saturday to take part in the Midwest Duals starting at 9 a.m.

Central Missouri 22, Newman 16

285: Nick Lovejoy, UCM won by forfeit.

125: Dustin Reed, NU won by forfeit.

133: Daide Agnew, UCM dec. Jake Gentzler 6-5.

Tied 3-3 after the first period, Agnew picked up the escape in the second before Gentzler responded to tie things again at 4-4 before Agnew earned the winning takedown later in the period.

141: Caleb Crabtree, UCM dec. Garrett Whitson 10-4.

A reversal from Whitson in the first period tied things at 2-2, but Crabtree responded with a reversal of his own and two back points to build a 6-2 lead. Whitson got withing 6-4 with an escape in the second, but couldn't get any closer.

149: Steffon Fassett, UCM dec. Forlanda Parker 12-10.

Parker got the opening takedown of the bout for the second night in a row, this time adding a four-point nearfall to take a 6-0 lead to the second period, but Fassett started taking advantage from neutral to grab the win in the third period.

157: Tyler Horton, UCM dec. Colton Duhr 4-2.

Two stall points put Duhr in a hole early, and after Horton grabbed the bout's only takedown in the third period to stretch his lead, Duhr was unable to get out from bottom.

165: Noel Torres, NU dec. Allan Person 5-2.

A second-period escape gave Torres a 1-0 lead, which held into the third period before Person hit a reversal to momentarily take the lead. Torres escaped to tie things up and picked up a penalty point to take a 3-2 lead before sealing the win with a takedown late.

174: Archie Williams, UCM maj. dec. Heath Gray 16-5.

Williams, who was nationally ranked at the weight class for much of the season, started things off with a big first period, leading 8-1 after three minutes and taking it home from there.

184: Kyle Ryan, NU dec. Mike Boyd 10-3.

Taking it to one of the few seniors on the UCM team, Ryan rolled up his second straight win to start his Newman career in much easier fashion than his last-second win Wednesday night.

197: Dalton Weidl, NU maj. dec. Robert Schneider 19-7.

Weidl didn't make the same mistake two nights in a row, staying off his back against Schneider, who entered with 11 wins on his record already. It's Weidl's first major of the season and the most points he's scored in a match so far.
