Jets Win First Dual, Reed, Weidl Go 4-0 At Midwest Duals

KEARNEY, Neb. — Dustin Reed and Dalton Weidl went undefeated on the day and the Newman wrestling team earned its first dual victory of the season Saturday at the Midwest Duals at the Buffalo County Fairgrounds Exposition Center.

Reed, who is ranked No. 2 in the nation at 125 pounds, moved to 15-1 on the season, earning two major decisions and a forfeit to go with a 6-1 decision. The junior allowed just four points on the day, all coming on escapes by his opponents.

Weidl made it five consecutive wins with his 4-0 day to move to 10-5 on the season. The sophomore, who has posted four bonus-point wins during his winning streak, recorded two falls and a major Saturday, outscoring his opponents 26-4 in the process.

Senior Colton Duhr added a pin and a major, going 3-1 on the day, while freshman Heath Gray and sophomore Kyle Ryan each earned a pair of victories in four chances.

The Jets (1-5) broke into the win column with their third match of the day, topping Minot State on criteria 22-21. Senior Jake Gentzler came up big for the team in his bout at 133, earning a 14-8 decision over Colton Nichols to give the Jets an early 9-0 lead after Reed received a forfeit to start things off.

When added to Gray's third-period fall and decisions out of Ryan and Weidl later in the match, Gentzler's lone win of the day was even bigger, keeping the score tied at 21 and breaking the tie in criteria, as his second-period takedown was the first of the match and the deciding factor in the tiebreaking procedure.

The Jets started off the morning with tough losses to Southwest Minnesota State (27-16) and Chadron State (33-12). A 24-19 loss to Mary ended the day, a match that saw Newman win five of the eight contested bouts, including four majors.

Newman is back in action with another tough matchup, hosting Central Oklahoma Tuesday night.
