Schultz' 28 Leads Jets Past York, 88-76

WICHITA - Keaton Schultz nearly doubled his previous career high scoring effort, scoring 28 points to lead the Newman men's basketball team to an 88-76 win over an upstart York College squad Saturday afternoon in front of 427 fans inside Fugate Gymnasium. Schultz was one of four Jets to post double figures in the contest.

York (8-6) wasted no time informing the Jets that this game would in no way, shape, or form resemble last year's 119-68 drubbing of the Panthers. Newman (6-2) scored the first points of the game, but the Panthers, who are receiving votes in the NAIA national poll, proved up to the challenge. York held the lead three times, and forced four ties in the first 10 minutes of the game. By the half-way point of the first half, the Jets found themselves clinging to a 22-21 lead. The pesky Panthers simply wouldn't go away, forcing three more lead changes and another tie in the next four minutes of play. The game was tied, 32-32, with 4:58 remaining in the first half, but the Jets went to work, turning on the afterburners and using a 12-2 run to end the half, and took a 44-34 lead into the halftime intermission.

York's Corey Standerfer scored the first points of the second half, but Newman responded with nine-straight points, sparked by a Keaton Schultz three, to take a 17-point, 53-36, lead by the 16-minute mark, and forcing the York coaching staff to call a time-out. What YC head coach Brandon Tatum told his team in that timeout remains a secret, but it was enough to motivate the Panthers. York scored nine-straight points coming out of the time-out, and narrowed the lead to eight at 53-45. Two free throws by Jake Darby and a Jaray Mathews lay-up pushed the lead back out to 10 with 12:43 to play. Newman's lead increased to 17, 70-53, with less than eight minutes to play, but York still showed no interest in throwing the white flag. The Panthers rode the long ball to a 16-1 run, and quickly narrowed the Newman lead to five, 71-66, with three minutes left on the clock, but the Jets finished the game on a 17-10 run, and earned the 88-76 win.

Schultz's 28 points was a game-high. He had broken his career high scoring effort by halftime, when he had 17 points. The junior hit 11 of his 16 field goal attempts, including four of his eight shots from long range, to lead Newman. Jaray Mathews added 19 points and added 10 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, and it came on his birthday. Justin Berry added 12 points and five rebounds for the Jets, while Jake Darby finished with 11 points, six assists, and four rebounds in Newman's sixth win of the season.

Darren Best led York with 15 points in the contest.

With the win, the Jets improve to 6-2 on the season. They are back in action Thursday when they open Heartland Conference play by hosting St. Edward's in an 8 p.m. contest at Fugate Gymnasium.
