Jets Bounce Dustdevils, 71-57

WICHITA - Another balanced scoring effort extended Newman's winning streak to five with a 71-57 win over Texas A&M International Saturday evening inside Fugate Gymnasium. Justin Berry shredded the TAMIU interior defense for 16 points in the Jets' winning effort.

Texas A&M International (3-7, 1-1 Heartland) struck first with a Luis Gomez long ball on the Dustdevils' second possession of the game, but Newman (8-2, 2-0 Heartland) responded with five-straight points to take their first lead of the evening. Those five points were the start of a 9-2 run by Newman that allowed the Jets to take a four-point, 9-5 lead by the 16:36 mark. Newman led by as many as five, 14-9, in the first 10 minutes of play, but an 11-3 Dustdevil run gave the visitors a 20-17 lead at the 8:49 mark. That run extended into a 20-5 run over the next three minutes when TAMIU owned a 10-point, 29-19 lead at the 5:20 mark. That was when Justin Berry took control of the game, going head-to-head with TAMIU's Will Faiivae and Bernard Burrell for six points that sparked a 14-2 Newman run that allowed the Jets to take a 33-31 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Both teams exchanged baskets to open the second half, as the Dustdevils took a brief 38-37 lead on a St. Paul Latham dunk at the 17:19 mark, but Newman countered with 10 unanswered points over the next four minutes to regain a nine-point, 47-38 edge that the Dustdevils could never recover from. A Jarvis Jackson lay-up at the 11:32 mark gave Newman it's first 10-point lead of the half, 53-43, and the Jets were never seriously threatened for the final 10 minutes, picking up the 71-57 win.

Berry went five-of-seven from the field, and six-of-seven from the free throw line on his way to a team-high 16 points in Newman's fifth-straight win. Jake Darby added 12 points and four rebounds, while Terrell Northington and Keaton Schultz added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Berry was also the game's high-rebounder, grabbing eight boards in the contest.

St. Paul Latham led Texas A&M International with 18 points, while Will Faivae added six boards to lead the Dustdevils.

With the win, Newman will take an 8-2 record into the Christmas break. They will return to action Dec. 30 when they travel to Lawton, Okla., for a non-conference contest with Cameron. Tip-off in Cameron's Aggie Gym is slated for 8 p.m.
