LAWTON, Okla. - A
Jake Darby jumper rimmed out at the buzzer, as Newman came up on the short end of a sloppy game, dropping a 47-46 decision to Lone Star Conference foe Cameron Wednesday night at Aggie Gym in Lawton, Okla.
Keaton Schultz led the Jets with 12 points as the Jets dropped their third game of the season.
Both teams struggled to put the ball through the net to open the game. After a combined seven missed shots to open the game, Schultz broke the ice with a three pointer to give Newman (8-3) a 3-0 edge with exactly 17 minutes left to play. A
Jake Darby free throw five seconds later pushed the Jets' edge to 4-0, but a Dernodo Eiland jumper put Cameron (9-3) on the board at the 16:18 mark. Those were the last points either team would score for nearly three minutes, as both teams combined for eight missed shots before
Tyler Nordman's jumper gave the Jets a 6-2 edge at the 13:56 mark. A low-scoring see-saw battle followed for the next eight minutes, with neither team leading by more than four points. At the 5:25 mark, the game was tied at 14-14, but a Greg Morgan lay-up started a 9-3 Cameron run to end the half that sent the hosting Aggies into the locker room with a 23-17 halftime advantage.
Cameron pushed their lead to nine, 28-19, within the first two minutes of the second half. The Aggies achieved their largest lead of the game, 35-24, with 15:52 to play. Slowly but surely the Jets climbed back into the game, drawing to within one, 42-41, on a
Justin Berry lay-up at the 3:27 mark. Berry then tied the game with a free throw after being fouled on his lay-up. Cameron countered with a three-ball from Jacquez Williams to take a 45-42 lead that Newman couldn't quite overcome. Schultz nailed a jumper with 18 seconds left to bring the Jets to within one, 47-46. Cameron's Greg Morgan could have given the Aggies a three-point advantage, but he missed the front end of a bonus free throw situation.
Jaray Mathews grabbed the rebound off the miss to set up a potential winning shot. As time ticked down, the ball ended up in Darby's hands for a potential game winner, but his jumper rimmed out and the Jets were dealt their third loss of the season.
Schultz's 12 points led the Jets offensviely. He was the only Newman player to post double figures in any category. Mathews led Newman's rebounding efforts with nine boards. The Jets committed just two turnovers, while Cameron gave Newman the ball 14 times, but the Aggies out-rebounded Newman by a count of 48-33.
Jacquez Williams led Cameron with 13 points while Terry Dawson was the game's high-rebounder with 14 boards.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 8-3 on the season, while Cameron improves to 9-3. Newman is back in action Saturday when they resume Heartland Conference play with a trip to San Antonio to face Incarnate Word. Tip-off in UIW's McDermott Center is slated for 4:30 p.m.
