WICHITA - Four players posted double figures, including a 19-point, 10-rebound double-double by
Jaray Mathews, as the Newman men's basketball team rode late rallies in each half, and defeated Dallas Baptist, 86-81, Thursday night inside Fugate Gymnasium.
Keaton Schultz led the Jets with 20 points in the Jets' third consecutive win.
Chip Steven drained a three-ball to open the scoring and give Newman (11-4, 5-1 Heartland) a 3-0 advantage just better than a minute into the game, but Dallas Baptist (8-6, 3-2 Heartland) countered with a Jordan McGowen lay-up on the ensuing possession to set the pace for the next 13 minutes of play. Neither team was able to establish control of the contest early on, but a 6-0 run gave DBU a 12-8 edge at the 16:48 mark. Keaton Schultz trey gave the Jets a 21-19 edge. Dallas Baptist answered the call once ageain, thies time with a 5-0 run thanks to five-straight points from Braxton Adamson. This time the Patriots led by as many as seven on four occasions late in the half. Dallas Baptist led 39-32 at the 2:34 mark when the Jets decided it was their turn. Will Burdette jumper inside of 10 seconds to give Newman a 40-39 lead at the halftime break.
Both teams picked up where they had left off in the second half, with neither team leading by more than three through the first eight minutes of play. By the 10:56 mark, there had been seven ties in the game, including the 63-63 tie after a Heath Weichman lay-up tied the game for DBU. The Patriots broke that tie with an 8-2 run to take a six-point lead, 71-65, that seemed to give the Patriots control of the game. But once again, the Jets were up to the challenge, posting a 13-4 run to take a 78-75 lead after
Justin Berry converted the second of a two-shout free throw attempt. From there, the Jets were able to hit enough free throws down the stretch to hang on for the 86-81 win.

Jake Darby and
Chip Steven added 15-points and 12-points respectively to round out Newman's double-figure scorers.
DBU's Braxton Adamson led all scorers with 21 points in the contest.
With the win, the Jets improve to 11-4 on the season, and 5-1 in Heartland Conference play. They remain tied with Incarnate Word atop the Heartland Conference standings with a 5-1 record in conference play. Newman is back in action Saturday when they host Heartland Conference provisional member Arkansas-Fort Smith in a 2 p.m. contest at Fugate Gymnasium.
