Jets Drop Shootout at UIW, 108-93

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Keaton Schultz scored 24 points, and Newman put together it's highest offensive output of the season, but it wasn't enough to stop Incarnate Word as the Jets fell 108-93 to the Cardinals Saturday afternoon inside the McDermott Center in San Antonio, Texas.

Neither team was able to take control early in the game. After the first five minutes of play, Incarnate Word (9-3, 3-0) held a narrow 10-9 lead. Newman (8-4, 2-1) took a one-point, 11-10, lead when Jarvis Jackson drained a layup on the next possession, but the Cardinals answered with four-straight to take a three-point, 14-11, edge. UIW led by as many as six, 20-14, at the 11:56 mark, but the Jets responded with a 9-2 run capped by seven-straight points from Keaton Schultz, to take a 23-22 lead at the 9:08 mark. Pierce Caldwell drained a three-ball on the ensuing possession, and allowed the Cardinals to re-gain the lead, 25-23 with just better than eight minutes to play in the opening half. This time UIW would hold the lead for good. By halftime, the Cardinals had pushed the lead to seven, and led 47-40.

Incarnate Word set the tone early in the second half. Caldwell drained another long ball to give the Cardinals their first double-digit lead of the game, 50-40, and never looked back. Caldwell's three was the first points of a 23-6 run by Incarnate Word over the first six minutes of the game; a run the Jets could not recover from. UIW led by as many as 26, 82-56, by the 10:27 mark before Newman turned to the three-ball in an attempt to trim the margin. Newman scored 13 points in the final three minutes of the game, but UIW's lead was too large as the Cardinals were able to escape with a 108-93 win.

Schultz finished with 24 points as one of three Jets to finish in double figures in Newman's first Heartland Conference loss of the season. Jake Darby added 15 points, while Chip Steven finished with 11 points. Steven was also Newman's high-rebounder, with six boards in the contest.

Eric Stewart led Incarnate Word with 20 points, and was one of seven Cardinals to finish with 10 points or more in the contest.

With the loss, the Jets fall to 8-4 on the season, and 2-1 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Monday when they travel across San Antonio to face St. Mary's. Tip-off in Bill Greehey Arena is slated for 8 p.m.
