Jets Hold Off OPSU, 102-97

GOODWELL, Okla. - Keaton Schultz drained nine of his 10 three-point attempts, and scored a career-high 32 points to lead Newman to its sixth-consecutive win with a 102-97 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday evening inside Oscar Williams Field House in Goodwell, Okla. Schultz was one of five Jets to post double-figure scoring totals in the win.

The adrenaline may have been flowing too fast for players on both teams. Newman (14-4, 7-1 Heartland) missed shots on two of its first three possessions, and committed one turnover, while Oklahoma Panhandle State (8-10, 4-4 Heartland) turned the ball over on each of its first two possessions. Finally, Newman's Justin Berry pushed his way past OPSU's Stephen Colvin, and opened the scoring with a close range jumper to spot the Jets an early 2-0 lead. Newman scored on five of its next seven possessions, and held a six-point, 12-6, advantage after the first five minutes of play. Newman led by as many as eight, 16-8, after two Will Burdette free throws at the 13-15 mark, but the Aggies scored the next six points, and trimmed the Newman lead to two, 16-14, by the 11:54 mark.

It was a roller coaster ride for the next four minutes. Newman pushed its lead back to six, 20-14, at the 11:04 mark, but once again the Aggies fought back with a 6-0 spurt to tie the game at 20-20 with 9:12 left on the clock. Back-to-back treys from Chip Steven and Schultz, respectively, pushed Newman's lead back to six, 26-20, at the 8:49 mark, but like clockwork, OPSU responded, this time putting together an 11-1 run to take a four-point, 31-27 lead with 6:32 left on the first half clock. The Aggies held the lead until the final minute of the first half, when two Jarvis Jackson free throws sent the Jets into the locker room tied 42-42 at halftime.

The Aggies struck first in the second half, taking a 44-42 lead on a Trayvon Williams jumper, but three Schultz long balls sparked a 10-2 run that allowed Newman to regain the lead, and push it to six, 52-46, at the 17:49 mark. OPSU kept it close, never trailing by more than four for the next nine minutes of play, when Newman head coach Mark Potter gave Schultz the green light once again. Schultz buried treys on each of Newman's next three possessions, and allowing the Jets to push the lead back to 11, 79-68. Jumpers by Jake Darby and Steven, respectively, on each of Newman's subsequent possessions extende the Newman lead to 15, 83-68, with 6:38 to play, and seemingly put the nail in the Aggies' coffin, but OPSU needed just three minutes to cut the Jets' lead back to single digits, 87-78, at the 3:27 mark, but Schultz was on the scene on the following possession, draining another three to push the Newman edge back to 90-78.

OPSU refused to go down without a fight, however, stringing together an 11-3 run to draw within four, 93-89, The Aggies drew within three, 98-95, in the final seconds of the game, but free throws from Jackson and Jake Darby helped secure the game for Newman, who escaped Oscar Williams Field House with a 102-97 win.

Schultz drained nine long balls in the game, and finished with a career-high 32 points in Newman's sixth-straight win. Will Burdette came off the bench and scored a career-high 18 points, while Steven added 12 points. Justin Berry and Jake Darby each added 10 points to round out Newman's double-digit scorers. Jaray Mathews grabbed a game-high nine rebounds in the winning effort.

OPSU's Marcale Marshall led his squad with 24 points, while Trayvon Williams led the Aggies' rebounding effort with eight boards.

With the win, the Jets imrprove to 14-4 this season, and 7-1 in Heartland Conference play. They will start the second rotation of conference action Thursday when they host upstart St. Mary's in an 8 p.m. contest at Fugate Gymnasium.
