SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Newman men's basketball team picked up it's first Heartland Conference road win of the season Monday night with a 68-60 win over St. Mary's inside Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio.
Jaray Mathews led the Jets with 15 points as one of four Jets to finish in double figure scoring.
St. Mary's (6-7, 2-2) came out of the gates ready to play, jumping out to an early 7-2 advantage in the first four minutes of the game. The Rattlers extended their lead to six, 11-5, by the 13:46 mark, but Newman (9-4, 3-1) countered with a 12-0 run to take a 17-11 lead on a
Chip Steven jumper at the 9:51 mark. The Jets extended that run to 16-2 when a
Keaton Schultz lay-up pushed Newman's lead to eight, 21-13, with 6:24 to play in the half. The Rattlers struck right back, though, stringing together an 11-0 run of their own to take a 24-21 lead by the 3:13 mark. It was a battle to the finish line from there, as Newman held a one-point, 31-30 edge at the halftime break.
The Jets made the first move in the second half, opening the half on an 11-4 run, and pushing their lead to eight, 42-34, by the 16-minute mark. Newman achieved its first 10-point lead of the night when a
Jake Darby jumper gave the Jets a 50-40 lead just over halfway through the half. The Jets extended their lead to as many as 14, 54-40, just over a minute later when
Justin Berry's jumper tickled the twine, and the Jets never trailed for the final eight minutes. St. Mary's snuck back to within four, 59-55, in the final minute of the game, but the Jets ended the game on a 6-2 streak to secure the 68-60 win.
Jaray Mathews led the Jets with 15 points, and added a team-high seven rebounds in the process.
Will Burdette finished with 12 points and four rebounds, while
Chip Steven and
Keaton Schultz added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Curtis Mitchell led St. Mary's with 16 points.
With the win, the Jets improve to 9-4 on the season, and 3-1 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Saturday when they host the Lincoln Blue Tigers in a 4:30 p.m. contest inside Newman's Fugate Gymnasium.
