Jets Fall at Texas-Permian Basin, 3-1

Nathan Nece scored Newman's only goal Sunday.
ODESSA, Texas – Three-straight goals by Texas-Permian Basin lifted the Falcons to a 3-1 win over the Newman men's soccer team Sunday afternoon in Odessa, Texas. Nathan Nece tallied his third goal of the season in the loss.

Newman (3-12, 2-4 Heartland) played nearly perfect through most of the first half, until keeper James Esquivel was whistled for a handball out side the goalie box, which allowed Texas-Permian Basin (3-13, 3-4 Heartland) a free kick. UTPB took advantage of the mistake, when Jose Anchondo put the Falcons up 1-0 off the free kick.

UTPB added two more goals in the second half, one by Tyler Gibson in the 59th minute and another by Marcelo Andres in the 70th minute, to extend the Falcons lead to 3-0.

The Jets posted their first goal of the game with just a minute and a half left in the match. Nathan Nece headed a cross pass from Nicos Esquivel into the left side of the net to narrow the margin to 3-1.

The Jets were out-shot 21-20 by the Falcons, but won the corner kicks battle 4-3.

With the loss, the Jets drop to 3-12 overall and 2-4 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Friday night at Wilkins Field for a 7 p.m. match against Texas A&M International.
