Jets Break Skid at Lincoln, 94-85

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - Six players posted double figure scoring efforts as the Newman men's basketball team broke a three-game losing streak with a 94-85 win over Lincoln Saturday night at Jason Gym in Jefferson City, Mo. Keaton Schultz led Newman with 17 points in the winning effort.

Lincoln (4-19, 1-12 Heartland) made the first move as Ryan Smith drained a three-pointer in the first minute of play to spot the Blue Tigers an early 3-0 lead. Newman (16-7, 9-4 Heartland) responded with a 12-2 run, capped by a Jarvis Jackson trey that gave the Jets a 12-5 lead. That run turned into a 23-5 run, as a Will Burdette jumper pushed the Jet out to a 23-8 advantage. The Blue Tigers tried to sneak back into the game, cutting the Newman lead to nine after an Anthony Welch three at the 8:55 mark, but the Jets ended the half on a 20-12 run, and took a 51-34 lead into halftime.

The Blue Tigers found answers to their problems in the second half, keeping the Newman lead managable throughout the course of the second half, but Lincoln was never able to take the lead in the final frame. Newman hit some key free throws down the stretch, and held off the Blue Tigers, and broke a three-game skid with a 94-85 win.

Keaton Schultz was one of six Jets to finish with double-digit scoring totals. Schultz led the Jets with 17 points, while Jarvis Jackson added 16 points. Terrell Northington posted a career-high 13 points, while Will Burdette and Chip Steven posted 12 and 11 points, respectively. Justin Berry rounded out Newman's double-digit scorers with a 10-point outing. Filling in for the injured Jaray Mathews, Burdette also led the Jets in rebouding, grabbing eight boards in the game.

Anthony Welch led Lincoln with a career-high 24-point outing.

With the win, the Jets improve to 16-7, and 9-4 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets are now mathematically assured of a spot in the 2010 Heartland Conference Championship Tournament next month at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas. Newman is back in action Thursday, paying a visit to Heartland Conferece provisional member Arkansas-Fort Smith for an 8 p.m. tip-off at the Stubblefield Center.
