DALLAS, Texas - Road woes continued for the Newman men's basketball team Saturday afternoon, as the Jets dropped an 88-69 decision to Dallas Baptist inside the Burg Center.
Keaton Schultz and
Tommy Brumbelow each scored 15 points to lead the Jets.
Adrenaline was flowing hard in the opening minutes of the game. The two teams combined to miss their first seven shots of the game, but an Eddie Gloviak free throw gave Dallas Baptist (16-9, 9-5 Heartland) the first points of the game. A Braxton Adamson three-pointer gave the Patriots a four-point advantage before the Jets could even get on the board.
Keaton Schultz scored the first point of the game for Newman (16-9, 9-5 Heartland), cashing in on the back end of a two-shot free throw attempt. Schultz followed with a three-pointer nearly 90 seconds later to give the Jets their first field goal of the game, one that brought Newman to with two points of the Patriots, 6-4. Keeping with the theme, Schultz added a jumper on Newman's next possession to tie the game at 6-6 with 15:20 still to play. Dallas Baptist had an answer in the form of an 8-2 run, and pushed its lead back to six, 14-8, at the 13:17 mark. Newman kept the lead managable over the next five minutes, and had drawn to within three, 22-19, after
Jaray Mathews hit two free throws, but the Patriots responded once again, this time scoring the next 10 points of the game to take a 13-point, 32-19 lead with 6:52 left on the clock. The Jets were able to close to within five on three different occasions throughout the remainder of the half, but trailed by eight, 44-36, after the first 20 minutes of play.
Once again, Schultz scored the first points of the second half, draining three-straight free throws on Newman's first possession of the half, and drawing the Jets back to within five, 44-39, but once again DBU had an answer. The Patriots strung together a 12-2 run over the next four minute to push their lead back to double figures, this time taking a 15-point, 56-41 edge at the 16:20 mark. DBU never led by less than 10 points from that point on, as the Jets trailed by nearly 20 for the remaining 15 minutes, before settling for the 88-69 loss.
Schultz finished with 15 points in the game; the same point total as teammate
Tommy Brumbelow, who went six-for-10 from the field on his way to a season-high 15 points.
Jake Darby added 13 points, while
Jordan Honore' posted a career-high 11 points in just 12 minutes of action.
Jaray Mathews grabbed seven rebounds before fouling out in just 19 minutes of play.
Braxton Adamson led DBU with 28 points as one of five Patriots to post double figures.
With the loss, the Jets fall to 16-9 on the season, and 9-5 in Heartland Conference play. Even after the loss, Newman remains tied with Dallas Baptist for third place in the Heartland Conference standings, trailing second-placed St. Mary's by one game. The Jets return to action Thursday, hosting Oklahoma Panhandle State in the annual Pink Zone game. Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
