Jets Travel to Emporia to Face Hornets

Newman (5-2, 0-0 Heartland) at Emporia State (5-2, 1-1 MIAA)


Emporia, Kan.- The Newman men's basketball team will look extend it's winning streak to three games Wednesday, when it travels to Emporia, Kan. to take on the Hornets of Emporia State University. Tip-time is scheduled for 7 p.m. inside historic White Auditorium.

Meet the Jets...
Newman will look to push its winning streak to three games when they enter White Auditorium to take on Emporia State on Wednesday night. The Jets are coming off an 83-73 victory over East Central Dec. 3 in Ada, Okla.. The early portion of the season has been up and down for Newman, as five returning players are getting accustomed to playing with 10 newcomers.

The Jets are averaging 70.1 points per game, and are outscoring the opposition by nearly six points per contest. Newman will look to bring its field goal percentage up, as they are only shooting 39.7 percent from the field, and 30.9 percent from behind the arc. Newman has been dominant on defense, forcing 15 turnovers per game, and snatching nearly 10 steals per contest. The Jets have typically picked up the pace in the second half, outscoring their opponents 284-227 in the period.

Eric Saunders and Chuck Coley have led the offensive attack for Newman, averaging 12.9 and 10.6 points per game respectively. Coley is also the team's leader in rebounds, averaging nearly seven boards per game. The Jets have used the same starting lineup (Saunders, Coley, Traylor, Felter, and Wesley) in each of the first seven games, and their starters have contributed 65 percent of the team's total scoring output throughout the season.

The House that Potter Built...
Newman basketball head coach Mark Potter is in his 14th season as head coach for the Jets. He has been at the helm since basketball was reinstated at Newman University in 1997. Coach Potter is 248-148 (.626) overall and is the winningest coach in Newman basketball history. He is also one of just two coaches at Newman to win more that 100 games. Potter is the only coach in Newman men's basketball history to be able to call Fugate Gymnasium home.

Last Time Out...
The Jets notched their second win in a row, defeating East Central University in a 83-73 second half comeback on Saturday in Ada, Okla. Four Jets scored in double digits in the contest. Eric Saunders led the charge, scoring a team-high 19 points while snatching four rebounds. Chuck Coley added 13 points and five rebounds while Bobby Wesley went four-for-nine for 11 points. Connor Walker came off the bench to score 12 points for the Jets in just 16 minutes of play. Newman shot 49.2 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from beyond the arc while making 21 of their season-high 35 free throw attempts.

Scouting the Hornets...
Emporia State enters Wednesday's contest with a 5-2 record on the season. The Hornets are coming off a 59-57 last-second win over  Missouri Western Dec. 3 in St. Joseph, Mo..  In that contest the Hornets had four players score in double digits and were led by Derrell Connor who had a team high 13 points and five rebounds. Troy Pierce added a double-double, going for 10 points and 10 rebounds while Tola Lawal and Chris Sights both went for 11 points each. As a team Emporia State is shooting 44.5 percent from the field, 38.1 percent from beyond the arc and are cashing in on 69.2 percent (92-133) of their free throw opportunites.

Walking the Tightrope...
Emporia State leads the all-time series 17-6 dating back to 1973. Wednesday marks the first time the two schools have met since Dec 9, 2009 when the Jets handed the Hornets a 80-77 home loss in White Auditorium. Each of the last five meetings between the Jets and the Hornets have been settled by five points or less.
