Men's Basketball Blasts OPSU, 100-69

GOODWELL, Okla. - The Newman men's basketball team ended its regular season on a high note with a 100-69 win over Oklahoma Panhandle State Thursday night inside Oscar Williams Fieldhouse in Goodwell, Okla. Justin Berry led all scorers with 16 points in the win.

Newman (15-11, 7-5 Heartland) made its statement early in the contest, scoring the first 10 points of the game to take a 10-0 lead just better than three minutes into the game. Oklahoma Panhandle State (6-21, 3-8 Heartland) scored its first bucket at the 15:21 mark, and cut the Jets' lead to six, 17-11, with 10:53 to play, but an Eric Saunders lay-up sparked a 21-6 run over the next five minutes, capped by a Tommy Brumbelow lay-up that gave Newman a 38-17 lead with 5:47 to play. The Jets led by as many as 26 pionts when Chris Hansen's jumper gave Newman a 46-20 advantage with 3:12 still to play. From there Newman cruised to the halftime intermission with a 20-point, 51-31 lead.

The Jets eliminated any hope of an Aggie comeback in the second half, opening the final period with a 24-6 run over the first seven mintues, and took a 75-37 lead with a Tyler Nordman trey at the 13:38 mark. Newman's reserves played most of the final 10 minutes of play, but that didn't keep the Jets from hitting the century mark on a Mason Felter jumper with 2:01 remaining in the game. OPSU scored the final six points of the game, but at that point it was far too little, and far too late for the Aggies, as Newman picked up the 100-69 win.

Justin Berry finished as the high scorer in the game, using a six-for-10 effort from the floor to post 16 points. William Burdette was next in line, finishing with 14 points, while Kyle Grant and Keaton Schultz added 13 points a piece. Chris Hansen rounded out Newman's double-digit scorers with a 10 point outing. Mason Felter was Newman's leading rebounder, grabbing nine boards in the game.

Michael Dorton and Kevin Geofroy each scored 11 points to lead the Aggies.

With the win, the Jets finish their sason with a 15-11 overall record, and a 7-5 mark in Heartland Conference play. Newman will enter next week's Heartland Conference Championship tournament as either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed, depending on results of a number of games to be played Saturday. The tournament begins Friday at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.
