DALLAS, Texas - 
Haley Dotson and 
Karol Marins combined for 34 kills, but it wasn't enough to lead the Newman volleyball team to a win. The Jets dropped a five-set decision to Dallas Baptist, 17-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-21, 13-15, Saturday afternoon at the Burg Center in Dallas. 
-Newman (1-9, 0-4 Heartland) kept things close in the first set, taking an early 5-4 lead after a 
Haley Dotson kill, but Dallas Baptist (7-5, 2-2 Heartland) answered with an 8-3 run to take a 13-8 lead. The Jets rallied to within four, 17-13, after a DBU ball handling error, but the Patriots closed out the set with a 25-17 win.
-The Jets regained the momentum early in the second set. 
Karol Marins broke a 2-2 tie with a kill that sparked a three-point spurt that gave Newman a 5-2 lead after a 
Dotson kill. Newman maintained a lead of at least three until a 
Gabby Loxterman service error pulled the Patriots back to within two, 10-8, but 
Marins put the Jets back on track wtih another kill, this time starting a 10-4 run that gave the Jets a 20-12 lead. From there it was a matter of taking care of business, and the Jets did just that. 
Dotson killed a set from 
Loxterman to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-15 second-set win. 
-Dallas Baptist returned the favor in the third set. A 
Michelle O'Dell service error broke a 3-3 tie, and set a three-point Patriot swing into motion. Those three points proved to be just enough as DBU maintained a lead of at least three for the majority of the match. Newman snuck back to wihin two, 18-16, after another 
Dotson kill, but that was as close as Newman could get. DBU ended the set on a 7-4 run to take a 25-20 third-set win. 
-Newman responded to its 2-1 deficit by jumping out to an early 3-0 thanks to kills from 
Marins and 
Dotson. DBU answered with an 8-5 run to tie the set at 8-8. The Patriots stayed within two points of the Jets until the 14-14 mark when 
Katelyn Schmidtberger was blocked to give DBU a 15-14 lead. DBU extended that lead to as many as 19-16 late in the match, but a pair of DBU attack errors and a block-assist from 
Alysia Heideman and 
Chelsea Helena allowed the Jets to take a 20-19 lead. The Patriots answered with two-straight points to take a 21-20 lead, but another 
Marins kill sparked a five-point run that tied the match at 2-2 with Newman's 25-21 fourth-set win. 
-The fifth set was exactly what a fifth set should be. After spotting DBU a 3-1 lead, Newman rallied to take a 4-3 lead after a 
Schmidtberger kill, but DBU answered with two-straight points to take a 5-4 lead. After a see-saw battle until the 7-7 mark, DBU took advantage of back-to-back Newman attack errors to take a 9-7 lead that ultimately proved to be the difference in the set. After leading by as many as four, 14-10, DBU held off a late Newman charge for a 15-13 win to secure the match.

Dotson recorded 20 kills on 40 attempts while committing just six errors to lead Newman offensively. 
Marins added 14 kills on 34 attempts and committed just one error.

Gabby Loxterman was Newman's primary setter, notching 45 assists in the match.

Alysia Heideman caused the DBU offense all sort of problems at the net, dishing out a match-high 10 block-assists. 
-Newman used a team approach defensively. Senior 
Kristen White led the way with 22 digs and was one of five Jets to record 11-or-more digs. 
Loxterman and 
Michelle O'Dell each added 17 digs, while 
Amanda Savage finished with 11. 
-As a team, the Jets hit .191 in the match, converting 59 kills on 183 attempts and committing 24 errors over five sets. The Patriots hit .183 as a team. 
With the loss, the Jets fall to 1-9 on the season, and 1-4 in Heartland Conference play. They will return to action Tuesday, hosting sixth-ranked Washburn in a 7 p.m. non-conference match inside Fugate Gymnasium.
