Volleyball Sweeps Friends for First Win of 2011

Katelyn Schmidtberger posted an 18 dig, 11 kill double-double in a 3-0 sweep of Friends.

WICHITA - Haley Dotson and Katelyn Schmidtberger each recorded 11 kills and powered the Newman volleyball team to its first win of the season, a 3-0 sweep of arch rival Friends. Nearly 500 fans were on hand to witness the rivalry contest Tuesday evening inside Fugate Gymnasium.

- Michelle O'Dell broke a 5-5 first-set tie from behind the service line. The junior transfer from Drury picked up kills from Dotson and Megan Holick and took advantage of a Friends attack error to give Newman the momentum with an 8-5 lead.

- Friends rallied from a 24-19 deficit late in the first set and pulled to within two, 24-22 before a Jeana Farruggia kill sealed the first-set win for Newman.

- Newman scored the first three points of the second set and pushed that lead to as many as 8-3 before Friends rallied to within two, 11-9, but back-to-back kills from Allison Bailey and Farruggia and a service ace from Dotson gave the Jets a 15-9 lead. The Jets went on to win set two, 25-16.

- The Jets jumped out to a 10-3 lead after a Dotson kill in the third set only to watch Friends use a 5-1 run to pull within 11-8. Newman countered with a 5-2 run to take a 16-10 lead but again Friends was up to the challenge. The Falcons pulled to within two on four occasions late in the set, but Newman scored the final three points to secure the match with a 25-20 win.

- Dotson and Schmidtberger each had 11 kills in the match followed closely by Farruggia and Karol Marins who had nine a piece.

- Schmidtberger and Marins each had a .529 attack percentage for the match.

- Schmidtberger and Gabby Loxterman combined for all 39 of the Jets assists.

- Kristen White led the Newman defense with 11 digs.

- Newman posted 44 kills in the match while Friends scored 33. The Jets finished with a .337 attack percentage and held Friends to a .196 clip.

With the win the Jets improve to 1-4 while Friends drops to 3-5. They will return to action Sept. 15 hosting St. Mary's in their Heartland Conference opener. The first serve is slated for 7 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
