Box Score WICHITA - The Newman men's basketball team kept its undefeated home record alive with a 70-66 win over Texas A&M International Thursday evening inside Fugate Gymnasium. The win moves Newman's home record to 7-0 on the season.
Newman (10-4, 2-0 Heartland) jumped out to an early 9-2 lead and never looked back. The Jets maintained that seven-point edge with a 41-34 lead at halftime. After trailing by as many as 10 near the halfway point of the second half, Texas A&M International (12-4, 2-1 Heartland) cut the lead to four with 10:13 to play. The Dustdevils trimmed Newman's lead to two with five minutes to play, and again in the final seconds of the game, but a pair of
Eric Saunders free throws sealed the win for the Jets.
The last 10 minutes of the ball game was owned by Newman. After a two minute stretch of a combined three missed field goal attempts,
Josh Pleasant ended the streak for both teams with a jumper at the 8:58 mark, extending the Jet lead to 57-51. TAMIU clawed back to within two at the 5:33 mark, following a three-pointer by Scottie Payne. A
Shamar Acuay alley-oop, assisted by
Eric Saunders pushed the Jet lead to 67-61 with 3:09 remaining, but the Dustdevils kept the reoccurring theme of staying in the game, after a Ryan McLucas three-pointer trimmed the Newman lead to 67-65 with 2:32 remaining. That was the closest TAMIU could get to gaining the lead.
Eric Saunders closed out the game at the charity stripe, securing the victory for the Jets.
Newman finished the game shooting 45.6 percent (26-57) from the field, converting 40 percent (6-15) of its three-point attempts. The Jets held a Dustdevil squad that was shooting 50.3 percent on the season to just 41.5 percent (22-53) from the field, converting 41.7 percent (5-12) of their attempts from beyond the arc. Newman held two out of the three leading scorers for the Dustdevils under their season scoring averages, holding Ryan McLucas and Brian Schaeffer to 11 and zero points respectively. Evan Matteson led all scorers with 24 points.
Chuck Coley led the Jets with 14 points, and added seven rebounds, six assists and three blocks.
Eric Saunders added 13 points and six assists, while
Josh Pleasant dumped in 11 points, eight boards and three steals.
