Box Score AUSTIN, Texas - The Newman men's basketball team watched a late second half lead slip away, but rallied for a 90-88 overtime win over St. Edward's Saturday afternoon at the Recreation & Convocation Center in Austin, Texas. The win was the first-ever win for Head Coach

Neither team was able to control the early pace of Saturday's game. Newman (13-4, 5-0 Heartland) finally took a 10-6 lead after
Darrell Traylor converted an old-fashioned three-point play with 17:16 remaining on the first half clock, but St. Edward's (9-9, 1-5 Heartland) answered with a 7-2 lead to take a 13-12 edge with 13:52 to play. After trailing by as many as three, Newman put together a 7-3 run of its own, and took a 22-18 lead on
Mason Felter's lay-up with 9:46 to play in the opening period. After a series of five lead changes over the next five minutes, the Jets found themselves tied at 29-29 at the 4:23 mark. The Hilltoppers broke that tie with a 5-0 spurt, and took a 38-33 lead with 2:39 to play, but
Kalub Long's lay-up on Newman's next possession sparked a 9-2 run over the final 2:39 of the opening half, and allowed the Jets to hit the halftime locker room with a 42-40 lead.
Newman opened the second half with a quiet 9-4 run over the fist seven minutes of the period, and took a 51-44 lead when
Connor Walker drained a three at the 13:00 mark. The Hilltoppers pieced together a 6-2 spurt over the next 90 seconds, and pulled to within 53-50 at the 11:30 mark, before eventually narrowing the Newman margin to 57-56 with 8:29 to play. Once again, the Jets responded with a 9-5 run to push the lead to 66-60 with 5:49 on the clock, Newman took its largest lead of the night when
Bobby Wesley's lay-up gave the Jets a 77-68 lead with 1:41 on the clock. St. Edward's turned to the long ball as its weapon of choice in the final 90 seconds. The Hilltoppers drained back-to-back triples to pull within 82-77 inside of the final 40 seconds, then took advantage of four-straight missed Newman free throws to complete their comeback, ending the second half on a 5-0 run, including a Khaliq Gross lay-up inside of the final two seconds that forced overtime with the game tied at 82-82.
St. Edward's drained a pair of free throws to take a two-point lead as the overtime period began, but Newman answered with five-straight points to take an 87-84 advantage at the two-minute mark. The Jets never trailed from that point forward, but did find itself tied at 88-88 after a pair of Hilltopper free throws with 24 seconds to play, but a mid-range jumper from
Bobby Wesley with five seconds to play gave Newman the 90-88 win.
Darrell Traylor scored 18 points to lead the Jets, while
Bobby Wesley finished with 14 points of his own.
Chuck Coley added 12 points before fouling out after 28 minutes of action.
Josh Pleasant was Newman's leading rebounder with eight boards in the contest.
Shimeek Johnson and Khaliq Gross each scored 24 points to lead the Hilltoppers.
As a team, Newman shot 47.6 percent (30-63) in the contest, while allowing SEU to shoot 40.6 percent (28-69) from the floor. Both teams grabbed 42 rebounds in the game.
With the win, Newman imrpvoves to 13-4 on the season, and remains unblemished at 5-0 in Heartland Conference action. The Jets will return to action Monday, hosting Dallas Baptist in a 7 p.m. contest inside Fugate Gymnasium.
