Shamar Acuay scored a career-high 25 points and
Mason Felter added a career-best six blocks as the Newman men's basketball team earned an 85-69 win over Dallas Baptist Monday evening inside Fugate Gymnasium. The win was Newman's sixth-straight, and the ninth-straight on its home court.
Playing its third game in five days, Newman (14-4, 6-0 Heartland) showed little signs of fatigue in Monday's contest. The Jets held Dallas Baptist (11-7, 2-2 Heartland), which hadn't played since Jan. 14, scoreless until Nick Fox's lay-up put the Patriots on the board at the 14:34 mark. Fox went on to score 13-straight points for DBU, and helped the Patriots take a brief 15-14 lead, but Newman used a 9-2 run, capped by a
Chuck Coley three to take a 24-16 lead with 7:20 to play in the period. The Patriots trimmed Newman's lead to five, 28-23, three minutes later, but a
Josh Pleasant free throw sparked another 9-2 run that helped the Jets take their largest lead of the half, a 37-25 advantage, with 2:29 to play. Newman maintained a double-digit edge through the remainder of the half, and took a 39-27 lead into the halftime locker room.
Dallas Baptist scored the first six points of the second half, and needed less than 90 seconds to cut Newman's lead back to 39-33, but a triple from
Eric Saunders sparked a four-point swing that pushed the Jets' lead back to double digits with 18:03 to play. DBU made another push over the next minute, cutting Newman's lead back to seven, but the Jets had an answer to every threat. Over the next seven minutes, the Jets slowly, but surely built a 16-point, 57-41 lead after a
Darrell Traylor lay-up with 11:32 to play. The Patriots struck again over the next three minutes, whittling the Newman advantage to seven thanks to a 10-1 run, but Newman's counter, a 9-4 spurt, capped by an Acuay jumper, proved to the the nail in the Patriots' coffin. Newman took an 80-67 lead with 1:26 to play, and scored five of the final seven points of the game on their way to the 85-69 final count.
Shamar Acuay hit nine of his 13 shots from the floor, and added six free throws on his way to a career-high 25 points. The junior transfer grabbed six rebounds while dishing out four assists and snagging four steals.
Eric Saunders and
Darrell Traylor rounded out Newman's double-digit scorers. Saunders scored 12 points, while Traylor finished with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Chuck Coley's 12 rebounds was a game-high. Senior forward
Mason Felter rejected a career-best six of DBU's shots to help secure the win.
DBU's Nick Fox led all scorers with 31 points in the contest.
As a team, Newman shot an even 50 percent (28-56) from the field, including a 43.8 percent (7-16) effort from long range. The Jets converted 68.8 percent (22-32) of their free throws, while out-rebounding DBU 42-29. Newman finished with 11 blocks on the night, and forced 18 DBU turnovers. The Jets' bench out-scored that of Dallas Baptist, 45-9.
With the win, Newman improves to 14-4, and remains perfect at 6-0 in Heartland Conference play. The Jets will return to action thursday, traveling to Goodwell, Okla., to take on the Oklahoma Panhandle State Aggies. Tip-time is slated for 5:30 p.m. inside historic Oscar Williams Fieldhouse.
