Box Score Wichita, Kan. – The Newman men's basketball team upset No. 2 Washburn Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated in front of a capacity crowd inside Fugate Gymnasium.  Four Jets reached double digits in scoring in the 86-69 win as Newman secured a victory over the highest ranked opponent in school history.
 
After trading shots to open the half, the Jets jumped out to an early 7-2 lead thanks to a jumper from Ryan Mesh and a three-pointer from Marquis Cuyler at the 17:56 mark.  The Ichabods would answer with back-to-back jumpers to cut the lead to one, only to have Newman retake a five-point advantage.  Washburn tied the game at 11-11 with 14 minutes to play, but a Frankie Drayton three-point trey would put the Jets back on top and give them a lead that they would never relinquish.  The Ichabods' offense fought hard to keep the game close, but Newman's offense was relentless, and had an answer to every rally Washburn tried to put together.  A tip-in from Shamar Acuay with 56 seconds left gave the Jets their largest lead of the half, and a Josh Pleasant layup with four seconds to play gave Newman a 45-37 advantage going into halftime.
 
Washburn came out of the half with a vengeance, putting up five points before the Jets could get back on the board to cut the lead to 45-42.  A two-pointer from Cuyler got the Jets back on track, and after Trae Beck drained a shot from downtown a minute later, the Jets would never lead by less than five points in the game.  Following the Beck three pointer, the next ten minutes saw a back-and-forth battle, with the Jets trying to put the game out of reach and the Ichabods trying to climb back into it. Ryan Mesh gave the Jets their first double digit lead with a layup at the 7:13 mark, but Washburn would not go quietly as they continued to answer the Jets' offense.  Though Washburn had refused to let the game get out of hand and kept the pressure on Newman's offense to keep scoring, the Jets finally were able to pull away, finishing the game on a 9-0 run to seal the victory.  Josh Pleasant's dunk at the five second mark gave the Jets the final 17 point advantage, putting an exclamation point on the Jets' exhilarating upset.
 
Darrell Traylor and Shamar Acuay led the Jets with 15 points each.  Traylor shot a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the arc and added seven rebounds, while Acuay shot 5 of 8 from the field and notched three steals.  Josh Pleasant added 13 points and seven rebounds behind a 5-for-5 shooting effort from the floor, and Marquis Cuyler had 11 points in the victory.
 
As a team, the Jets shot 46.4 percent (26-56) from the floor and 39.1 percent (9-23) from three-point land.  Newman outrebounded Washburn 40-33 and shot 25 of 37 from the charity stripe.
 
Washburn's Will McNeill led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 3 of 7 from the floor and 14-17 from the free throw line.
 
The Jets remain perfect on the season with the win, improving to 9-0 (1-0 Heartland).  Newman will put that perfect record on the line Monday night when they take on the Tigers of East Central University at 7:30 p.m. inside Fugate Gymnasium.
