Last Time Out...
Newman suffered its first defeat in Heartland Conference play Thursday evening, dropping a 70-59 overtime decision to Arkansas-Fort Smith. The Jets jumped out to an early 5-2 lead over the first two minutes, before a  pair of Djordje Stojanovic free-throws sparked a 10-2 Lion run, giving UAFS a 12-7 edge with 15:37 remaining in the first half. The Lions held the Jets scoreless for the better part of seven minutes, before a Chuck Coley free-throw sparked a 6-1 spurt to pull within 20-15, following a Darrell Traylor three-pointer at the 6:16 mark. That would be the closest Newman would come in the opening half, going to the locker rooms trailing 24-17.

The Jets started the second half on a 12-5 run, tying the game at 29-29 after another Traylor triple at the 17:29 mark. UAFS countered with a 7-0 run, lasting three-minutes to gain a 36-29 edge. A pair of Ryan McCarthy free-throws ignited a 14-5 run, capped by a Shamar Acuay old-fashioned three-point play to give Newman a 43-41 lead with 9:56 left to play. The Jets held the lead for the better part of four minutes, before a Jalynn Mitchell jumper gave the Lions a 47-46 advantage. Eric Saunders hit a three-pointer with 5:31 to play, and gave Newman the lead going into the final three minutes of play. UAFS held the Jets scoreless until the 1:29 mark, when an Acuay lay-up tied the game at 51-51. Another Mitchell lay-up gave the Lions a 53-51 edge with 1:08 left in regulation. The Lions held that lead until the last five seconds when an Eric Saunders jumper sent the game into overtime deadlocked at 53-53.

Newman started the extra period on the right foot, tying the game at 56-56, following another Acuay free-throw, but the Jets were held scoreless from that point until the 43-second mark. By that time it was too little, too late. UAFS went on to score the final four poins of the contestt en route to the 70-59 upset victory.
