Last Time Out...
The Newman baseball team was swept by perennial power No. 1 St. Mary's on Saturday and Sunday, 5-0, 5-3, and 5-3.
Game 1:
St. Mary's (23-5, 17-2 HC) used a 3-0 first inning, highlighted by a lead-off home run to cruise by Newman (17-8, 12-7 HC). Carl O'Neal stifled the Jet bats, fanning 10 batters and allowing just four hits in the complete game victory. Solo runs in the fourth and sixth innings rounded out the scoring for the Rattlers en route to a 5-0 victory.
Game 2:
Newman (17-9, 12-8 HC) struck first in the second game of the double header. The Jets used Tanner Vinson's lead off walk, combined with a Ruben Marrero bunt single and a St. Mary's error to load the bases for Tyler Hancock. A Hancock walk pushed Vinson across the plate, and a Corey Cowan double play ball scored Shannon Engroff to give Newman the early 2-0 lead.
Kyle Burkhardt slowed the Rattlers' bats down for six innings, giving up two earned runs, while striking out seven batters. Reliever Tony Gonzales took the reins with the game tied 2-2.
The Rattlers took their first lead of the game in the seventh, 3-2, but the Jets responded in the bottom of the frame. With one out, David Longmore singled through through the left side, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A Jordan Ollenberger single to center field plated Longmore to tie the game at 3-3.
St. Mary's bullpen shut the Jets' bats down in the final innings, and scored single runs in the eighth and ninth innings to seal the 5-3 victory.
Game 3:
The series finale saw a pitchers' dual, in which one run was scored by St. Mary's (25-5, 19-2 HC) through the first three innings. The Rattlers plated another run in the fifth to extend the lead to 2-0. With one out in the sixth, Tanner Vinson and Tyler Hancock reached base with singles up the middle. A Ruben Marrero double down the left field line scored Vinson, and pushed Hancock to third. Back-to-back walks by Corey Cowan and David Longmore plated Hancock, and tied the game at 2-2 to force starter Skye Severns out of the game.
Shannon Engroff's RBI fielders' choice scored Ruben Marrero to give the Jets a 3-2 lead after six innings. St. Mary's bats caught fire in the late stages of the game. The Rattlers scored a pair of runs in the seventh, as well as another in the eighth, to give Newman its 10th loss of the season, 5-3.
